Tigers Pounce Griffins to Split CACC Series

Box Score  Philadelphia, Pa. – (2/19/2013) – Holy Family University earned a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) series split from Chestnut Hill College this evening, as the Griffins surrendered an early lead to the home team in a runaway 67-49 final. The halted Griffin offense was led by eight points apiece from senior guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, N.J.) and sophomore forward Alssene Saintilus (Irvington, N.J.).
 
Despite a strong opening five minutes, Chestnut Hill College (12-12, 8-7) struggled to find their mark on the Campus Center court. The guard play of senior Francis Ashe (Hyattsville, Md.) and junior guard Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, Pa.) shocked Holy Family University (16-9, 12-4) off the opening tip as they gained the Griffins a six-point lead at 17:07, 8-2, and again at 14:53, 12-6. Junior guard Ervin Ezell (Deptford, N.J.) and senior forward Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa.) brought the Tigers back, evening the score at 14-14 with 11:47 left, building a ten-point lead, 26-16, just past the seven-minute mark (6:48), and holding it there until Saintilus scored the half's last point with 1:15 remaining, 29-21. After intermission, junior guard Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C.) took over for the Tigers, who gradually grew their eight-point lead into a 15-point advantage, 50-35, by the 11-minute mark (11:04). By the eight-minute mark the margin reached 18 points, 55-37, and after a brief Griffin reprise, 60-49 at 2:04, the Tigers were left to secure their win from the charity stripe, 67-49.
 
Ayala's 20 points off the Tigers bench led all scorers. He teamed with Ezell to score 21 of the Tigers 29 first-half points before finishing the affair an additional 13 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Ezell also recorded three rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. Munoz provided the second Tiger double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.
 
DiRugeris and Saintilus led a 25.0% (17-of-68) team shooting effort with eight points apiece. Additionally, DiRugeris also provided three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, while Saintilus grabbed five rebounds, and made a steal. Bogans finished with six points, three rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
 
The men's basketball team completes their 2012-213 home schedule on Saturday, February 23, when they host the University of the Sciences in a 3:00 p.m. contest on Senior Day.
