Deacons Defeat Griffins in CACC Tournament Opener

Box Score Bloomfield, N.J. - (3/1/2014) – Sophomore forward Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led five Deacons in double figures with 15 points as a balanced team effort by N#1 Bloomfield College defeated S#4 Chestnut Hill College 84-62 in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Opening Round contest. Senior guard Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Griffin effort with 18 points while sophomore guard Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa.) was close behind with 16 points.
 
Bloomfield College (20-7) found themselves ahead of Chestnut Hill College (10-17) for a majority of the first half. Paced by senior guard Dondre Whitmore (Trenton, N.J.), sophomore guard Clarence White (Bronx, N.Y.), and freshman forward John Powell (Ashland, Mass) the Deacons turned an early 19-8 (10:43) advantage into a 38-27 halftime edge. Looking for a second-half spark, the Griffins would claw back within six points, 38-32 (18:37), soon after the break. A Walck layup at 15:55 kept the deficit at six points, 42-36, but the Griffins would soon find themselves chasing the Deacons in a 42-26 run to the final buzzer, 84-62.
 
Blue added eight rebounds and three assists to his team-high scoring effort. Junior guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) finished with 11 points and Whitmore totaled ten points, while White and Powell came off the bench for 12 and ten points, respectively. Senior forward Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) controlled the paint, hauling in 13 of the Deacons 43 team rebounds (43-23).
 
Bogans shot 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the field, including 2-of-4 (50.0%) from long range, and 2-of-2 (100.0%) from charity stripe to lead all scorers. He also recorded two boards, an assist, and a steal. Walck added three rebounds, two assists, and a steal to his offensive production.
 
The men's basketball team concludes the 2013-2014 season at 10-17 overall and 8-11 in the CACC play.
