Wildcats Get the Better of Griffins in CACC Opener

9/10/2014 8:57:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (9/10/2014) – Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play began this evening for the Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team, who was defeated in three sets by the defending South Division champions, 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-16).  The Griffins were led up front by sophomore outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) who fed off the two-way play of junior setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) and the defensive leadership of sophomore libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.).

Wilmington University (2-3, 1-0) used a quick start to win the evening's opening set, 25-14, and withstood a blow-for-blow second set, 27-25, before securing a league win with a 25-16 third-set victory. Chestnut Hill College (1-5) looked to Biro to keep them in the first set, as sophomore setter Emily Drew (Ringoes, N.J.) and Tamsing took turns feeding the Griffins middle striker for four kills. Unfortunately, sophomore outside hitter Allison Briley (Monroeville, Pa.) kept the Wildcats one step ahead with four kills and a block of her own. The second set went neck-and-neck as Trabosh and the Griffin defense slowed the Wildcats enough for McBride and Biro to establish a 21-17 advantage. However, the score did not stay in the Griffins favor long as junior opposite Alex Siolos (East Moriches, N.Y.) and senior setter Kasey Couch (Woodbine, Md.) combined to rally the Wildcats for a 27-25 win. They carried the momentum into the third set where Couch and Briley paced the Wildcats to a 25-16 closing win.

Briley headlined the Wildcat half of the box score with 15 kills on a .324 (15K-3E-27TA) and a solo block. Siolos and Couch offered versatile performances with the Wildcat opposite recording 11 kills, 12 assists, two aces, and eight digs, while the setter contributed 20 assists and ten digs to the winning effort.

McBride and Biro combined for 21 kills and 16 digs while Tamsing offered a double-double, 23 assists and 11 digs, to the Griffin cause. Behind them, Trabosh hustled to 24 digs to the Griffin defense.

The women's volleyball team will host a tri-match on Friday, September 12, when Nyack College and St. Anselm College visit Sorgenti Arena for a full evening action. The Griffins will open the match in a 3:00 p.m. CACC match against Nyack College, who will challenge St. Anselm at 5:00 p.m., before the Griffins conclude the day with a 7:00 p.m. match against the Hawks.
