Battaglia Blast Too Little Too Late In Loss to Wildcats

9/23/2014 6:02:00 PM

Box Score Newark, Del. - (9/23/2014) – Wilmington University broke through the Chestnut Hill College defense early in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, converting a rebound for a 1-0 advantage only 3:26 after the opening kickoff. The Griffins settled the Wildcats after the initial tally, but the home side scored twice more before halftime to leave a second-half score from sophomore Alissa Battaglia (Merrick, N.Y.) a footnote.

Senior forward Chelsea Grace (Palmyra, N.J.) fired the first shot for Wilmington University (2-4, 2-2), who took the lead on the ensuing rebound, 1-0 (3:26). The Wildcats looked to strike again leading up to the 20-minute mark, but senior goalkeeper Samantha Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.) managed to deny the Wildcats for a little while longer as freshman defender Alexa Smalley (Middletown, Del.) eventually extended the deficit to 2-0 when she scored a free kick of the Griffin wall at 32:18. Chestnut Hill College (1-5, 1-3) hoped to get to intermission without any more Wildcat goals, but freshman forward Loran Wyrough (Hamilton, N.J.) spoiled that thought with a through pass to fellow freshman forward Chandler Lages (Jackson, N.J.) at 44:51, 3-0.

The second half played more evenly with the Griffins gaining confidence on Battaglia's successful boot from 16 yards out just 2:12 after the kickoff. Unfortunately, the Griffins were not as fortunate on their other six attempts which came in shorts bursts off the feet of senior midfielder Katherine Williams (Pennsauken, N.J.) (3), junior midfielder Victoria Fedora (East McKeesport, Pa.) (2), senior defender Dakota Sheehan (Atco, N.J.), junior midfielder Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.) (1), and freshman forward Kylee Jazikoff (Brick, N.J.) (1).

Wildcats senior goalkeeper Julia Brown (Medford, N.J.) made three saves to collect the win (2-2) while Pauls totaled nine saves in the losing effort (1-5).

The women's soccer team travels to Dominican College for their next CACC contest, which is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, September 28.
