Ashcom’s Late Goal Not Enough as Lions Clip Griffins

9/30/2014 6:06:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (9/30/2014) – Senior midfielder Leanna Ashcom (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave the Chestnut Hill College women's soccer team some life with a goal in the waning minutes (88:06), but it proved too little too late as visiting Lincoln University held off the Griffins for a 2-1 victory in non-conference action this afternoon. Desperately hunting an equalizer after Ashcom's first career tally, the Griffins were unable to get off another shot in suffering a third straight loss.

Despite playing with only one available substitute, Lincoln University (4-3-1) shocked Chestnut Hill College (1-7) with two goals in a span of just 21 seconds late in the first half. The first came off the foot of senior Tara O'Brien (Twickenham, England), who lofted a high kick over the head of Griffin goalkeeper Samantha Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.) from straight on to open the scoring at 40:44, 1-0. Less than half a minute later, the Lions struck again. Sophomore Tamara Greene (Piscataway, N.J.) gained possession off the ensuing kickoff, weaved her way through three Chestnut Hill College defenders, and snuck a powerful blast off the right post and into the back of the net for a surprise 2-0 lead at 41:05.

Despite being frustrated by nine offside calls and an inability to connect in the attacking third, the Griffins nearly halved the deficit early in the second half, 50:48, when junior midfielder Victoria Fedora (East McKeesport, Pa.) took aim on goal. But Lincoln goalkeeper Christian Harris (Rochester, N.Y.) got a piece of Fedora's bounding shot, and the ball caromed harmlessly off the right goal post and out for a Griffin corner, which went for naught.

Chestnut Hill College amped up the pressure and finally cracked the Lions defense with less than two minutes remaining, when Fedora dribbled into the box and aimed a perfectly-placed cross in toward Ashcom, who slotted home with her right foot to give Fedora her first career point and cut the deficit to 2-1 at 88:06. The Griffins quest for an equalizer, however, came up short as Lincoln held on for its second consecutive victory. O'Brien led the Lions attack with seven shots, while Greene added three and freshman Taylor Brookins (Sewell, N.J.) recorded two. Harris (4-3-1) made six saves to preserve the win.

Senior midfielder Katherine Williams (Pennsauken, N.J.) let fly with a season-high seven shots for the Griffins, who held an 18-13 advantage in that category and outshot the Lions, 12-4, in the second half. Fedora attempted three, while senior midfielder Lauren Bjorke (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and sophomore forward Alissa Battaglia (Merrick, N.Y.) logged two apiece.

Junior transfer Kayla Reno (Catonsville, Md.) took over goaltending duties for Pauls (1-7) after intermission and made three saves in her first action for Chestnut Hill College.

The Griffins return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to Caldwell College for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff.
