Box Score New Castle, Del. - (9/12/2015) – For the fourth time in their first eight matches Chestnut Hill College competed in a deciding set, this time battling Pace University to a 3-2 loss (23-25, 21-25, 25-21, 30-28, 15-9) that saw 18 kills from sophomore middle hitter
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) and eight team blocks in a rollercoaster affair. Junior outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) and senior outside hitter
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) joined her with double-digit points while junior libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) provided another all-tournament performance with 32 digs in the Griffins' final match at the Wildcat Regional Invitational.
Chestnut Hill College (0-8) trailed Pace University (2-5) to a 22-22 stalemate in the opening set before taking the frame 25-23 on a Setter miscue and kills from McBrida and Gelfan. The Griffins rallied for another win in the second set with Biro connecting for two clutch kills in a four-point run that earned them a 25-21 win and a 2-0 edge on the Setters. Unfortunately, the next set did not go as planned for the Griffins, who trailed the Setters in a 25-21 third-set spread before enduring losses of 30-28 and 15-9 in a 3-2 match final.
Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Lecker (Littleton, Colo.) registered 26 points for the Setters with 24 kills and four block assists. She was complemented by 15 kills from freshman outside hitter Claudia Fontanet (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and supplied by freshman setter Mira Wallace (Oshkosh, Wis.), who totaled 43 assists in addition to her ten digs.
Gelfan continues her impressive sophomore season, setting a career best (18 kills) in her third double-digit performance. McBride followed with 13 kills and Biro with 11. Freshman setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) supplied 31 assists in addition to six kills, two aces, 14 digs, and a block assist.
Trabosh was joined on the all-tournament team by Franklin Pierce University's senior libero Sarah MacHugh (Red Hook, N.Y.), American International College junior outside hitter Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia), Le Moyne College junior outside hitter Natalie Casson (Kingman, Ariz.), Caldwell University sophomore middle blocker Katrina Janssen (Seville, Australia), Holy Family University senior right side Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill.), Pace University senior libero Rebecca Italiano (Lynbrook, N.Y.), and Wilmington University sophomore middle hitter Erin Bistany (Greenbelt, Md.).
The women's volleyball team travels next to Millersville University on Tuesday, September 12, for a 7:00 p.m. match.
