9/4/2015 7:46:00 PM

Box Score Waltham, Mass. - (9/4/2015) – Refreshed from their morning match versus University of Minnesota–Crookston (UMC), Chestnut Hill College took the court opposite the University of New Haven for an afternoon match at the Bentley University Invitational. Again, the Griffins found themselves in tight competition as they narrowly lost the first set, 25-22, and the fourth set, 26-24, to the Chargers after controlling play in the second, 25-13, and third sets, 25-19. The deciding set was just as fierce, remaining tied as late as 11-11 before the Griffins lost their focus in a 15-11 defeat; 3-2 (25-22, 13-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-11).

Junior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich.) kept the University of New Haven (1-1) one step ahead of senior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) and the Griffins in the opening set. The Chargers took an early 8-4 lead before freshman setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) gained control of the Chestnut Hill College (0-2) and fed Biro for a game-tying kill, 9-9. The Chargers regained the advantage with the next point, but the opponents never separated by more than a point until a Griffin service error increased the deficit to 21-19 and facilitated a 25-22 Charger win.

The loss only motivated the Griffins who were looking to secure the match after running away in the second, 25-13, and coming from behind in the third set, 25-19. They hit .429 (15K-3E-28TA) in the second set with junior outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) each scoring an ace while sophomore middle hitter Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Biro teamed for the only block they needed. In the third set the Griffins rallied from a 14-10 deficit to take the frame by a six-point margin on the spirited play of junior middle hitter Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) and senior defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.) who served Chestnut Hill College to victory with the set's last eight points, 25-19. Unfortunately, the Griffins endurance seemed to fade late in the fourth set as they led the Chargers 21-16 before ending up on the wrong end of a 26-24 final. In the deciding frame the Griffins owned an early 3-1 lead before trailing the Chargers the rest of the way, 15-11.

Kennelly was the Chargers primary target with 17 kills in addition to 16 digs and two blocks. Freshman setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla.) supplied the ball for her and the rest of the Chargers with 39 assists. Sophomore libero Devin Smith (Middletown, N.Y.) captained their defense with 20 digs while her teammates combined for eight blocks.

Biro was the top Griffin performer with 17 kills on a .270 (17K-7E-37TA) hitting percentage and a block assist. McBride and Koehler each finished with 11 kills thanks to 47 assists from Sutton. Trabosh made 28 digs to lead three Griffins in double digits while Shunk added five blocks to seven kills.
