Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) recorded a game-high 15 kills while hitting .591 (15K-2E-22TA) to lead the Griffins past USciences, 3-1 (27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-5), in a pivotal Central Collegiate Athletic Conference (CACC) match at Sorgenti Arena this evening.
Chestnut Hill College (8-10, 6-3 CACC) opened an 8-4 lead in the first set, led by freshman outside hitter
Reily Byxbee's (Indianapolis, Ind.) three kills. USciences (4-9, 3-7) responded, with a kill by sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Checca (Mullica Hill, N.J.) knotting the game at 10-10. The two teams would trade points, with the largest lead being four (18-14), following an ace by Byxbee. The Devils would stave off five set-points, but the Scarlet and Gold was finally able to break through, capturing the first set 27-25.
The second set saw the Devils take control during the middle portion of the set, opening up a 16-12 advantage following a kill by freshman opposite Samantha Spurrier (Berlin, N.J.). The Griffins responded, closing out the set on a 13-2 run clinch the second set 25-18.
The Griffins and Devils sat at 10 apiece in the third set before a 10-1 run by the Devils blew the contest open. The Griffins would chip away at the deficit, cutting it down to five, 23-17, but USciences was able to hold on, clinching the set 25-19 and pushing the match to a fourth frame.
Chestnut Hill College opened the fourth set with a bang, racing out to a 9-1 advantage following a Koehler. The lead would balloon to 13, 17-4, before Byxbee put the game away, registering five kills in an 8-1 run by the Griffins to clinch the match with a 25-5 victory.
Koehler led the Griffins' attack, scoring 15 kills, five blocks and a pair of digs. Byxbee was right behind her, registering 14 kills on a .195 hitting percentage (14K-6E-41TA), 16 digs and one block on the evening. Sophomore setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded a match-high 43 assists.
The Devils were led by sophomore opposite Dakota Raymond (Chadds Ford, Pa.) who recorded six kills, with senior setter Meghan Neff (Wilmington, Del.) handing out a team-best 30 assists.
Chestnut Hill College will continue CACC play on Friday, October 14, when they travel to Philadelphia University. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
