Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/19/2016) – Despite a 21-point effort from junior center
Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.), the Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team was unable to overcome a halftime deficit, falling to the University of the Sciences (USciences), 83-65, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at Sorgenti Arena on Monday evening.
Chestnut Hill College (4-8, 1-4 CACC) and Usciences (3-10, 2-4) opened the first half going tit-for-tat, with a Evans three pointer putting the Griffins up one, 15-14, with 14:48 remaining in the first half. The Devils would break the game open from there, using a 14-3 run over 6:27 to take a commanding 28-18 lead with 8:21 remaining. The Griffins rattled off eight of the next nine points, capped by a jumper from junior forward
Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.), cutting the deficit to three, 29-26, with seven minutes (7:00) left in the half. That is the closest the Scarlet and Gold would get, however, with a layup from junior forward Will Gregorits (Burke, Va.) with 1:18 remaining giving the visitors a 39-30 edge, which they would take into the halftime break.
USciences held a convincing 22-8 edge in points in the paint, including a 7-0 margin in second chance points for the half.
The Devils pushed their advantage in the opening minutes of the second half, extending their lead to 13 points, 52-39, following a layup from senior guard Jon McGill (Folsom, Pa.) with 15:45 left in the contest. The Griffins would cut the deficit to 10 (60-50) following a second-chance layup by freshman
Nasir Bell (Philadelphia, Pa.) with just under 10 minutes to play (9:24), but that is as close as they would come as the Devils finished the game outscoring the Griffins 23-15 to take an 18-point 83-65 victory. The dominance in the paint continued for the Devils, outscoring the Chestnut Hill College 24-12 in the paint in the half to finish the contest with a 46-20 edge in the category.
The Devils were paces by Gregorits, who finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. McGill led all scorers with 24 points, while also chipping in seven rebounds. Junior guard Flo Da-Silva (Moorestown, N.J.) did it all for the Devils, scoring six points, dishing out five assists, grabbing four rebounds and recording five steals.
The Griffins were led by Evans' 21 points, on 9-of-14 (64.2 percent) shooting from the floor. Sophomore forward
Bryant Quill (Pottstown, Pa.) recorded 11 points off the bench while Bell came off the bench strong, scoring nine points, grabbing six rebounds, recording four assists, recording two blocks and one steal.
The Griffins will return to action after the New Years holiday when they resume CACC play, hosting Post University on Wednesday, January 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
