Box Score Rochester, N.Y. - (12/3/2016) – Leading most of the way, and by as many as a dozen (12) points (64-52) midway through the second half (10:47), Chestnut Hill College still required a last-second (0:03) jumper from junior guard
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) to preserve an 82-80 victory at Roberts Wesleyan College this afternoon. Junior center
Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) scored a team-leading 23 points as he showcased his range with three, three-point baskets (3-of-4, .750) to match his recently established career-high.
Isaac ran point for Chestnut Hill College (4-4), locating Evans and junior forward
Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) off the jump ball and propelling the Scarlet and Gold to a 43-37 halftime lead over Roberts Wesleyan College (0-7). Late in the opening period, the Griffin frontcourt demonstrated some impressive hi-lo offense as McWade found Evans twice in a burst that ended with a layup from sophomore forward
Bryant Quill (Pottstown, Pa.) and left Chestnut Hill College up 10 points, 43-33, with a minute (0:59) to go. Unfortunately, the Redhawks narrowed the halftime difference to six points, 43-37, with a free throw and a three-point basket from sophomore guard Zack Panebianco (Jamestown, N.Y.).
Early in the second half, Evans energized Chestnut Hill College for an 11-point, 48-37, advantage with a three-point shot at 19:49 (46-37) and connection with Isaac that resulted in a score by sophomore forward
Dekpe Yiljep (Samaru-Zaria, Nigeria) at 19:06. From there, the Griffin lead hovered around double digits, before a late-game Redhawk rally cut the margin to a single point, 70-69, at 3:37. But, an Isaac visit to the charity stripe refocused the Griffins (72-69 at 4:24). Then the hustle of sophomore guard
Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) and the defense of sophomore forward
Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) reestablished Chestnut Hill College with a seven point, 77-70, lead with 1:30 to play. Still, the Redhawks delivered the drama, reducing the Griffin advantage back one point, 78-77, with just 23 seconds (0:23) to play. Roberts Wesleyan College tied the contest only seconds later (0:15), 80-80, but left too much time on the clock for Isaac, who hit the game-winning jumper (82-80 at 0:03) on the Griffins' final possession.
Sophomore guard Quinn Carey (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) led the Redhawks with 23 points. Junior center Mailk Dare (Cohoes, N.Y.) offered 15 points and seven rebounds, while Panebianco came off the Roberts Wesleyan College bench for 16 points, a rebound, three assists, and two steals.
Evans has scored a career-high 23 points in back-to-back games; he hit 10-of-14 (.714) from the floor and complimented his scoring with six rebounds and a steal. Awl offered 13 points, six rebounds, and an assist, while Toplyn was the Griffins' top reserve with 14 points and six rebounds. Isaac finished with eight points, five rebounds, ten assists, and a steal.
