Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (9/27/2016) – The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team held off a late rally in the third set by the visiting Goldey-Beacom College Lightning to clinch a pivotal Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 28-26) , at Sorgenti Arena this evening.
The two teams were evenly matched in the early going, with a kill by Chestnut Hill College (5-9, 3-3 CACC) senior middle hitter
Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) putting the hosts up one, 14-13. With the Griffins holding an 18-16 edge on the scoreboard, Goldey-Beacom College (3-4, 1-4 CACC) went on a 4-0 mini-run, capped by a kill by junior middle hitter Jax Babezki (Warrington, Pa.) to take a 20-18 lead. The Griffins responded after calling a timeout, scoring seven of the final 10 points to secure the 25-23 first set victory.
The teams continued to go point-for-point in the second set, with the Lightning trailing by just one, 10-9, following a kill by senior outside hitter Grace McCarthy (Middletown, Del.). The Griffins blew open what had been a close set in the ensuing minutes, ripping off an 11-4 run capped by kill from senior outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) to take a 21-14 edge. The Lightning looked to hold on, closing the gap to four, 22-18, after an ace from McCarthy, but the Scarlet and Gold would not be denied, scoring three straight points to take the set 25-18.
The third set saw a see-saw battle until the end, with neither team gaining a significant advantage in the stanza. The Griffins were able to open a 15-11 advantage on the hot serving of sophomore outside hitter
Emma Mull (Jeannette, Pa.). The visitors rallied on the back of freshman libero Makinsie Balderson's (Fairfax, Va.) serving, knotting the score at 17 apiece. The Griffins were on the verge of victory following a kill from sophomore setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) put the hosts up 24-20. The game would get sloppy from that point on, with the Griffins going up 25-24 following a service error. The Lightning would score back –to-back points to force a set point of their own (26-25) but the Scarlet and Gold would power through, with back-to-back blocks by Koehler and freshman middle hitter
Chase Cooksey (Herndon, Va.) clinching the 28-26 victory and 3-0 sweep.
McBride was the leading attacker for the hosts, scoring 11 winners while hitting .400 (11K-1E-25TA), while junior right side
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) was second on the squad with 10 kills of her own. Sutton poured in a match-best 36 assists in the match with senior libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) notching 26 digs in the victory.
McCarthy led all players with 15 kills to go along with a match-best four service aces. Babezki hit .467 on the night (8K-1E-15TA) to lead the team in hitting percentage, while ranking second in kills. Balderson led the Lightning with 14 digs on the evening.
Chestnut Hill College will continue CACC play on Friday, September 30, when they travel to Wilmington University. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
