Philadelphia, Pa. - (11/11/2017) –Chestnut Hill College put on an exciting show while celebrating their seniors
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) and
Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) during their fight against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rivals Wilmington University. The Griffins were able to push the Wildcats into a nail biting five-set series, but their celebration was interrupted by the tenacious efforts of the visitors in the last two possessions of the final set, resulting in a 3-2 (25-27, 25-16, 20-25, 25-22, and 16-14) loss.
Chestnut Hill College (9-21, 8-10 CACC) stole the first set from Wilmington College (14-17, 10-8 CACC) as a constant back-and-forth battle developed into a 25-25 tie. Sophomore outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) put the Griffins on her back and recorded a crucial kill that gave the Griffins the edge they needed to finish out the period with a 25-27 win (0-1). The Wildcats came back with a fury and the second set was less glamourous for the Scarlet and Gold, losing the set 25-16 (1-1).
After the intermission, the Griffins responded to Wilmington University's prior win and silenced them in the third with a tied score of 15-15. It was anyone's game but a kill from freshman middle hitter
Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) allowed the home team to gain the momentum they needed to slowly pull away closing the period 25-20 (1-2). The Griffins had the fourth set ripped from underneath them after tying the affair 22-22 but the Wildcats were able to stop any further points and capitalized offensively winning 25-22, 2-2.
An attack error and a Byxbee kill gave the Griffins the early 0-2 edge that eventually turned into seven different ties throughout the final set. The two teams were in a standstill 14-14 tie and it was anyone's game. Unfortunately, two consecutive errors resulted in the 16-14 demise of Chestnut Hill College, ending their 2017 season 3-2.
Freshman outside hitter Mandy Behiels (Edmonton, Alberta) headlined Wilmington University's offense recording 19 kills (.260) followed by senior middle hitter Eile Harris (Tabernacle, N.J.) adding 15 kills (.462) of her own and not far behind sophomore middle hitter Rebecca Rawlinson (Cockeysville, Md.) contributed 10 kills. Defensively four Wildcats were in the double digits for digs but sophomore defensive specialist Addalyn Flores (La Plata, Md.) was accountable for 34 digs herself.
Corrine Kalala had an impressive 16 kills and four digs while sophomore middle hitter
Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) (13), and Byxbee (13), all recorded double-digit kills as well. Reno gave a 24 dig effort with five assists and classmate Gelfan recorded 11 kills and one assist in their final Chestnut Hill College match. Junior setter
Kennedy Sutton's (Chesapeake, Va.) 47 assists and 22 digs were not enough in the 3-2 loss.
