Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/5/2017) – Chestnut Hill College battled through another tough Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South engagement at Jefferson University, challenging the Rams to the short end of a bitter 66-61 final. Freshman guard
Colin Flach (Glenside, Pa.) found his outside shot to lead the Griffins to a 34-24 halftime advantage, but after intermission it was the Rams who shot their way to victory with a 60.9% (14-of-23) second-half shooting performance. Junior guard
Cartier Talford led Chestnut Hill College with 16 points and five rebounds.
Jefferson University (6-5, 2-0) led the early going, but Talford brought Chestnut Hill College (1-7, 0-2) even, 8-8, just prior to the 13-minute mark (13:12). Again the Rams separated, this time losing the Griffins by as many as seven points, 17-10 (8:57), before Flach's three-point barrage gave the Scarlet and Gold their first lead, 21-19, of the affair with 5:48 remaining in the first half. Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) highlighted close, completing an old fashioned three-point play (26-23, 3:30) and hitting a pair of free throws to give the Griffins an eight-point advantage, 31-23 (1:31), before senior guard
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) made the deficit double digits, 34-24, with a last second (0:05) jumper.
Chestnut Hill College's advantage maxed out at 11 points, 39-28, on a Talford three pointer at 18:25. From there, senior forward Yevgen Sakhniuk (Kiev, Ukraine) rallied the Rams to victory. By 14:58, Jefferson University tied the contest at 39-39 and five minutes later (8:57) they posted their first advantage, 49-47 (8:57), of the second half on a layup from freshman guard Alexander Gorton (Jonesboro, Ark.). Still, the contest remained close and an Awl three pointer briefly won the Griffins a 54-53 (5:08) lead before the Rams separated for good on a responsorial layup (55-54 at 4:40) from senior guard Kaison Randolph (Trenton, N.J.).
Sakhniuk finished with a double-double, totaling 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Rams, but Randolph led them in scoring with 19 points. Randolph also recorded nine rebounds and an assist. Gorton totaled 13 points, two rebounds, an assist, and a block.
Talford's effort was supported by 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists from Isaac. Awl added eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Flach added a pair of rebounds to his two rebounds.
The Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team resumes their CACC schedule on Saturday, December 5, when they visit the University of the Sciences (USciences) for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
