Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (1/3/2018) – After trailing by 18 points, 47-29, at halftime, Chestnut Hill College rallied to lead by two points, 62-60, on a layup from senior guard
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 2:42 remaining to play. A follow up free throw from junior forward
Roman Letterlough (Harrisburg, Pa.) pushed the Griffin advantage to three points, 63-60 (1:59), but the edge was quickly erased, 63-63 (1:46), before a last-second (0:00) layup by sophomore forward Miles Gillette (Washington, DC) won the Wildcats a wild Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) affair, 67-65. Isaac scored 16 of his team-high 25 points in the second half, shooting 9-of-12 (.750) from the floor and 6-of-6 (1.000) from the free throw line in the process.
Wilmington University (8-6, 3-2) sophomore guard Jermaine Head (Edgewood, Md.) was the story of the first half, hitting five three point (5-of-6, .833) baskets in a 9-of-11 (.818) shooting performance that totaled him 23 points by intermission and earned the Wildcats a 47-29 halftime advantage over Chestnut Hill College (1-12, 0-6). Freshman guard Danny Walsh (Bear, Del.) extended Wilmington University's initial lead to double digits, 23-12, at 9:27. Less than two minutes later (7:51), he grew the Wildcat lead to 17 points, 29-12, with a pair of fastbreak buckets, before hitting the three pointer that put the visitors up 19 points, 36-17, with 6:15 in the opening frame. When he was not scoring, Head was, including a beyond halfcourt, buzzer beater that nudged the Wildcats to an 18-point, 47-29, halftime advantage.
In the second half, Head and Walsh were replaced by Isaac as the Scarlet and Gold captain willed the Griffins back into the affair. He cut the Wildcat lead to single digits, 48-39, by 12:25, scoring eight points in a 10-1 Chestnut Hill College run. Five minutes later (7:34), junior guard
Cartier Talford (Reading, Pa.) hit the layup that brought the Griffins within two points, 52-50, but the Scarlet and Gold did not catch Wilmington University until Isaac found junior guard
Dexter Thompson (Providence, R.I.) for a thunderous dunk, 60-60, just before the three-minute mark (3:02). An Isaac layup (62-60, 2:42) and a Letterlough free throw (63-60, 1:59) put Chestnut Hill College in good position heading to the final minutes. But, a clutch Walsh three (63-63, 1:46) and the timely play of Gillette reversed fortunes as the latter's last-second flick found the Wildcats a way out of overtime, 67-65.
Head finished the contest 10-of-20 (.500) from the floor and 3-of-5 (.600) from the free throw line in a game-high, 29-point performance. He also recorded four rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Walsh totaled 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while senior guard Shawn Church (Darby, Pa.) offered 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Gillette ended the affair with eight points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.
Isaac added seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal to his 25 points. He was supported by a balanced effort that included five players with five points of more; most notably was junior forward
Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) who finished the contest with six points, 10 rebounds, an assist, four blocks, and three steals.
The Chestnut Hill College men's basketball continues their CACC schedule on Wednesday, January 10, when they visit Post University for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
