Game Recap: Sprint Football |

Navy Hands Chestnut Hill College First CSFL South Loss

Annapolis, Md. – (10/19/2018) – Senior linebacker Jonathan Baldwin (Hudson, N.H.) and the Chestnut Hill College defense held the United States Naval Academy (Navy) at bay for their first three possessions and limited the Midshipmen to seven first half points in an eventual 31-0 Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) final. Senior running back Raevon Floyd-Bennett (Union City, N.J.) led the Griffins in all-purpose yardage with 13 carries for 38 yards (2.9 yards/carry), two receptions for 16 yards (8 yards/reception), and 17 returns yards (8.5 yards/return).

Baldwin ended Navy's (4-1, 3-0 CSFL South) first drive with a nine-yard sack, but the home team wore on the Chestnut Hill College (2-3, 2-1 CSFL South) on their fourth possession, using a short field and a pair of long rushes from junior running Caleb Champion (Milton, Fla.) (16 yards) and sophomore running back Brayden Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) (15 yards, Touchdown) to take a 7-0 lead with 9:19 remaining in the second quarter. The Scarlet and Gold had their best chance to get on the scoreboard later that frame as a pair of short rushes from Floyd-Bennett, a Midshipmen penalty, and a 21-yard pass to junior wide receiver Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) brought the Griffins all the way to the Navy one-yard line before a fumble turned the ball over. Unfortunately, after halftime, Navy added to their lead on all three third quarter possessions (17-0, 3:49, 3QTR) and twice more in the fourth quarter (6:45, 2:15) to win the matchup of the CSFL's top two South Division teams by a 31-0 final.

Junior quarterback Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) was 9-for-25 (.360) with a pair of interceptions. He totaled 95 yards, including the 21-yard toss to Hill. Hill led the Chestnut Hill College receiving corps with 32 yards on three receptions (10.7 yards/reception), while Floyd-Bennett accumulated for 38 of the Griffins' 43 rushing yards. Baldwin totaled nine tackles (7 solo, 2 assisted), four for a loss of 11 yards and a half of a sack (0.5). Sophomore defensive lineman Marcus Hems (New Hope, Pa.) offered the other half of that sack (3 tackles; 1 solo, 2 assisted), while senior defensive end Kyle Johnson-Hackett (Philadelphia, Pa.) was responsible for the other Griffin sack (5 tackles; 3 solo, 2 assisted). Sophomore defensive back Terrell Bush (Valley Stream, N.Y.) recorded his first interception of the season on Navy's first fourth-quarter drive (13:40, 4QTR).

Chestnut Hill College returns to A.A. Garthwaite Stadium on next Friday, October 26, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) in their Senior Night finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be preceded by a 5:00 p.m. Fan Fest.
