Chargers Outlast Griffins in Second Half

Orangeburg, N.Y.– (10/6/2018) – Dominican College gained an early 1-0 edge over Chestnut Hill College in the first half of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. Despite trailing, junior defender Geena DiRugeris (Woodbury, N.J.) and freshman defender Haley Oneill (Langhorne, Pa.) combined efforts gave the Griffins their first advantage of the the contest in the second half (1-2).  Unfortunately, the Chargers responded by adding two more goals defeating the the Scarlet and Gold 3-2.

Both Chestnut Hill College (2-1-1, 1-6-1 CACC) and Dominican College (2-9-1, 2-5-1 CACC) struggled finding scoring opportunities in the first half, only recording three shots each. Despite the lack of looks at the net, the Chargers were able to convert one attempt into a goal at 11:16, 1-0. DiRugeris and sophomore forward Gabby Fanfarillo (Glassboro, N.J.) tried to respond to Dominican College but they were unsuccessful, ending the half 1-0.

At 52:08 of the second half, a DiRugeris serve off a free kick landed just under the crossbar, tying the affair 1-1. Less than five minutes later, a header from Oneill served by freshman forward Maddie Jimenez (Bensalem, Pa.) broke the deadlock giving the Griffins their first edge, 1-2. Dominican College did not allow the Scarlet and Gold's lead to last very long as they rallied together, at 60:01 (2-2) and tied the affair once again. From this point the race to gaining the advantage by the end of the half was on. Unfortunately, the Charger's momentum lifted them enough into recording their third goal, at 66:02 (3-2). The Griffin's last efforts to push the contest into overtime came from Jimenez and DiRugeris, but they fell short ending the contest 3-2.

Lauren Drake led Dominican College with one goal and one assist followed by one goal each from Abby Montera and Megan Geary. Sophomore goalkeeper Jasmine Pesante (Wappingers Fall, N.Y.) gave a three saves performance.

 DiRugeris attempted three shots leading the Griffins with one goal and Oneil scored off of her only shot attempt that was assisted by Jimenez ( 1 shot)Senior midfielder Marikate O'Toole (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore midfielder Madison Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) both took two shots each, while freshman midfielder Marisa Murphy (Bensalem, Pa.) and Fanfarillo chipped in one shot attempt each. Sophomore goalkeeper Paris Banks (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded six saves in the loss.

Chestnut Hill College will host Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday, October 10 for a 7:00 p.m. CACC contest.
