West Caldwell, N.J. – (11/3/2018) – Behind the explosive play of senior running back
Raevon Floyd-Bennett (Union City, N.J.), another impressive performance from the Scarlet and Gold defense, and the trusty foot of junior kicker
Dante Fuchs (Sinking Spring, Pa.), Chestnut Hill College secured a second straight 4-3 finish and second place in the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) South Division (3-1) with a 26-6 win over Caldwell University. Floyd Bennet totaled 176 all-purpose yards as he returned a punt 65 yards in the first quarter (7-0, 3:38 1QTR) and put the game on ice with a 54-yard run to pay dirt late in the fourth quarter (26-6, 3:50 4QTR).
Floyd-Bennett's return was the second straight turnover for Caldwell College (0-7,0-4 CSFL South), who turned the ball over four times and netted only 90 yards against the Chestnut Hill College (4-3, 3-1 CSFL South) defense. After the Cougars' second fumble of the first quarter, Fuchs ended a Griffin drive that spanned the first-quarter gap with his 26-yard field goal (10-0, 14:44, 2QTR). In turn, the Scarlet and Gold defense kept Caldwell University off the scoreboard until 10:23 remained in the second quarter; even then the Griffins gave the Cougars difficulty as sophomore defensive back
Nate Moser (Bethlehem, Pa.) blocked the extra point, 10-6. The score held into the fourth quarter as the Chestnut Hill College defense put an exclamation point on their performance with a safety, 12-6, at 14:15 of the final frame. Less than three minutes later (11:48), freshman
Ryan Jakeman (Cheltenham, Pa.) added a 12-yard pick-six to make the Griffin advantage 19-6, before Floyd-Bennett's breakaway run, 26-6.
Floyd-Bennett ran for 97 yards on 13 carries (7.5 yards/carry), caught a pass for another eight, and totaled 71 punt return yards to third game of 150 all-purpose yard of more. Both of Chestnut Hill College's junior quarterbacks took some snaps as
Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) passed for 78 yards on seven completions (7-of-16, .438) and
David Navas (Woodhaven, N.Y.) added another 47 on two completions (2-of-5, .400). Junior wide receiver
Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) was the main benefactor of their play with a team-high five catches and 91 yards (18.2 yards/reception). Senior linebacker
Kyle Johnson-Hackett (Philadelphia, Pa.) had another brilliant performance, leading the defense with seven tackles (6 solos, 1 assist); four of them were for a loss (16 yards), two were sacks (8 yards), bringing his season sack total to 7.5. The Griffins turned the Cougars over four times and totaled eight sacks in all.
In addition to their 4-3 finish, Chestnut Hill College recorded a 3-1 standing in the first year of CSFL South Division competition.
