Griffins Fall to Devils in CACC Opener, Pitts Scores Career High

Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/8/2018) – A career-high and game-high 22 points from freshman guard Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) was not enough to stop the University of the Sciences in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener. Chestnut Hill College held the edge, 30-29, in the first half, but a small run by the Devils early in the second half, changed the momentum resulting in the 76-64 loss.

Pitts opened the starting half with a three-pointer (3-0, 18:46) giving Chestnut Hill College the advantage. The Griffins had the hot hands as senior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) and Pitts sunk two more three's (17:45, 6-2; 16:10, 9-2) extending their lead to seven points. Holding as much as an 11-point (16-5, 12:02) edge, the University of the Sciences chipped away eventually taking a two-point lead, 27-25, at 2:08. A race to end the half on top was clear, as a put back from senior forward Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) tied the affair with 1:08 (27-27) left. The Devils came back with a response bucket (1:21, 29-27), but senior forward Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) ended the period the way the Griffins started, draining a three pointer at 1:03. Resulting in the 30-29 half.

A 34-34 deadlock at 18:32 of the second half, was the game changer of the day, as a University of the Sciences three pointer (37-34, 18:03) breaking the tie unfortunately would be the downfall for the Scarlet and Gold. From this point the Griffins struggled to regain their thrown as the Devils pushed the margin to as much as thirteen points (55-42, 10:29).  Not giving up, Chestnut Hill College fought their way back and trailed by only three points (59-56) at 5:21. Hoping to benefit off of missed free-throw attempts, the odds were not in the Griffin's favor, ultimately ending the match 76-64.

Senior forward Tanner Kerr (Avalon, N.J.) led the University of the Sciences with a double-double 21 points and 12 rebounds (2AST, 2STL), followed by a 17-point performance from classmate Brendan Crawford (Haddonfield, N.J.) (7REB, 2AST, 2STL).  Sophomore guard Paddy Casey (Scranton, Pa.) and junior forward Michael Fox (Windsor, Pa.) ended the double figure stats with 14 points (2REB, 1AST) and 10 points (4REB, 2AST) respectively.

On top of Pitts recording his career high 22 points, he also posted six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. McWade was the only other player to reach over double digits with 12 points (1REB,1AST,1STL).

Chestnut Hill College go back to non-conference play on Saturday, December 15, squaring off against Assumption College at 3:00 p.m. in Sorgenti Arena.
