Wilmington University Overwhelms Chestnut Hill College

Newark, Del. – (9/19/2018) – Outshot 25-2, Chestnut Hill College had trouble keeping pace at Wilmington University this afternoon as the Wildcats scored five second half goals in an eventual 6-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) final. Junior midfielder Pedro Dutra (Passos, Brazil) and senior forward Jason Doherty (Letterkenny Donegal, Ireland) were responsible for the two Griffin shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Sergio Hernandez (Ossining, N.Y.) (3-4) played a majority of the minutes in goal for the Scarlet and Gold and totaled five of their six saves.

Chestnut Hill College (3-4, 2-2) looked to get on the scoreboard early versus Wilmington University (4-0-3, 3-0-1), but their first two attempts to get in the offensive end were whistled dead on offside calls. The Wildcats responded, issuing several shots until junior forward Tom Garratt (Kingswinford, England) completed a pass from senior forward Will Stone (Littlehampton, England) at 30:45 (1-0). Wilmington University issued three more shots in the first half, but the first two met Hernandez's awaiting hands and the third sailed high to keep the margin at a single goal heading to halftime. After intermission, the Wildcats' shot advantage wore on the Chestnut Hill College defense. A second Wilmington University goal came at 54:54 (2-0) on a long pass over Griffin backfield and a third at 64:56 (3-0) on a touch goal from senior forward Sam Jester (Middletown, Del.). A header at 65:50 made it 4-0 and just a couple minutes later (67:41) the Wildcats extended the deficit to 5-0, before a late tally pushed the final to a six-goal margin (6-0, 81:44).

Stone led Wilmington University with a goal and three assists. Garratt finished with a goal and two assist, while for others including Jester each recorded at least a point. Senior goalkeeper Vinny Tasca (Audubon, Pa.) earned the win (4-0-3) without making a single save.

Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, September 22, when they visit Caldwell University for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
