Griffins Lose Grip On Caldwell University In Overtime Affair

Caldwell, N.J. - (9/22/2018) – Chestnut Hill College journeyed to Caldwell, New Jersey, for today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) event versus Caldwell University. Both teams were evenly matched throughout regulation, but it was the extra time that went against the Griffins, who suffered a 2-1 loss to the Cougars.  Senior forward Jason Doherty (Letterkenny Donegal, Ireland) scored the Griffins' lone goal, which was assisted by junior defender Paris Bruhn (Horst Holstein, Germany).

Caldwell University (2-5-1, 2-1-1) recorded the first point of the matchup at 18:29, where sophomore goalkeeper Sergio Hernandez (Ossining, N.Y.) successfully stopped their first attempt, but a follow up strike reached the back of the net, 1-0. The early edge did not deter Chestnut Hill College (3-5, 2-3) as a cross into the box from Bruhn located Doherty's feet, who knocked it past the keeper to tie the affair, 1-1, at 22:18). In the second half, both teams remained evenly matched pushing the contest into overtime. Doherty and junior midfielder Pedro Dutra (Passos, Brazil) tried to put the game away in the final five minutes of regulation taking, but Griffin attempts were both met by the Cougar goalkeeper's hands.

At 93:00, the Griffins had their first and only attempt of the overtime frame, but the header from sophomore forward Miguel Marra (Ossining, N.Y.) was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, the Cougars capitalized off their efforts locking in the win at 95:10 (2-1.)

Caldwell University was led by freshman defender Stian Rebo (Vestfossen, Norway) and freshman midfielder Martin Muller (Bergen, Norway), who both scored a goal. Junior forward Erlend Asase (Bergen, Norway) assisted on the game winner, while sophomore goalkeeper Nils Svere (Lier, Norway ) tallied five saves.

Doherty headlined Chestnut Hill College with one goal and two shots and Bruhn followed with one recorded assist. Dutra, freshman midfielder David Cortez (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.), and senior midfielder Tales Domingues (Sao Paulo, Brazil) all offered two shots each. Hernandez finished with four saves and junior goalkeeper Frank Maniscalco (Philadelphia, Pa.) collected one save in the loss (0-1).

Chestnut Hill College briefly breaks from their CACC schedule on Wednesday, September 26, to host Roberts Wesleyan College in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Victory Field #1.
