Late Run Takes Tigers Past Griffins, McWade Scores Season-High 21 Points

Philadelphia, Pa. – (1/16/2019) – A valiant performance from senior forward Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) earned Chestnut Hill College a 43-42 halftime advantage and kept the Griffins in the lead, 70-69, until the six-minute mark (6:03) of the closing frame. Unfortunately, the Tigers dictated the remaining time, forging ahead for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) prize with a 21-7 closing run; 90-77. McWade totaled 15 points in the first half and finished the affair with a season-high 21 points with an 8-of-14 (.571) shooting performance and a 3-of-4 (.750) showing from the free throw line.

Back-to-back three point baskets from McWade and junior guard Billy Miller VI (Pine Hill, N.J.) put Chestnut Hill College (3-13, 0-7) in the lead, 14-11, with 14:43 remaining in the first half. From there, the Griffins built a seven-point, 18-11 (12:19), edge before Holy Family University (8-6, 4-3) was able to challenge their intensity with consecutive three point baskets of their own (11:49, 10:40) that cut the spread to a single point, 18-17. With eight lead changes in the next five minutes (5:41), the Griffins were finally able to regain their advantage after a McWade three-point play, 32-29. Succeeding scores from freshman forward Amir Warrick (Washington, DC), McWade, and senior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) delivered the Scarlet and Gold a nine-point, 39-30 (4:34), but again the Tigers retaliated as they tied the contest, 41-41, by the two-minute mark (2:02). Fortunately, a McWade three point basket (44-41, 1:42) gave the Griffins the room they needed control a 44-43 halftime lead.

After intermission, Chestnut Hill College continued to pace Holy Family University, grabbing a seven-point, 52-45, lead on a jumper from freshman guard Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) at 15:53 and holding the advantage until an untimely tip-in evened the contest, 69-69, at 6:12. A McWade free throw initially gave the Griffins back the lead, 70-69 (6:03), but a three point basket from freshman guard Dymir Montague (Philadelphia, Pa.) pushed Holy Family University ahead, 72-70 (5:57), and gave them the momentum they needed to outrun Chestnut Hill College to a 90-77 final.

All five Tiger starters scored in double figures; junior forward Branden Aughburns  (Queens, N.Y.) led the ambush with 20 points, but his fellow junior forward Vincenzo Dalessandro (Levittown, Pa.) was the alpha with a 17-point, 10-rebound, double-double. Freshman guard Kharon Randolph (Philadelphia, Pa.) offered 16 points, Montague finished with 14 points, and freshman guard Patrick Robinson III (Chesterfield, N.J.) contributed 13 points. Holy Family University finished 16-of-25 (.640) from the free throw line, after only hitting 3-of-5 (.600) first half chances from the charity stripe.

McWade paired his 21 points with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. He was joined in double figures by Awl and Warrick; the former offered 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and three steals, while the latter contributed 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Chestnut Hill College next visits Nyack College on Saturday, January 16, for a 3:00 p.m. CACC tipoff.
