Molloy College Uses First-Half Success To Overcome Chestnut Hill College in 4-0 Affair

Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/30/2019) – Breaking from their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play and hosting Molloy College in their home finale, Chestnut Hill College play through the mist in tonight's affair. The Lions used three first-half goals and a 31-6 shot advantage to defeat the Griffins by a 4-0 final. Sophomore midfielder Lexi Verni (Patchogue, N.Y.) was Molloy College chief operator, giving the Lions a 2-0 edge with goals at 15:51 (1-0) and 33:07 (2-0), and leading their shooting barrage with seven attempts on goal. Sophomore forward Maddie Jimenez (Bensalem, Pa.) led the Scarlet and Gold effort with three of their six shots.

Verni gave Molloy College (11-3-1) an early 1-0 advantage on Chestnut Hill College (3-13), gathering and scoring a rebound off her own attempted cross at 15:51. The Lions kept the pressure on following the tally as Verni scored again at 33:07 (2-0), this time receiving a past behind junior goalkeeper Amanda Ianniciello (Milton, Ontario) for an open goal. They added a third goal just before halftime as Dana Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) received a pass at the top of the Griffins goal box, dribbled to her left, and reversed field to fire a shot to the back of the Scarlet and Gold goal at 42:05 (3-0). The Griffins fired five shots in the opening half; senior forward Nicole Cahill (Glendora, N.J.) took the first as the opening strike of the contest (00:36) and additional attempts followed from Jimenez (6:41, 31:37), sophomore midfielder Madison Taylor (Bensalem, Pa.) (11:41), junior forward Gab Fanfarillo (Glassboro, N.J.) (12:35), but all were unsuccessful and only Taylor's and Jimenz's second tested junior goalkeeper Jackie Carty (East Islip, N.Y.).

After intermission, Chestnut Hill College had trouble generating offense, leaving an early Jimenez shot (46:54) as the Griffins lone chance in the frame. Unfortunately, Carty made the stop, keeping her sheet clean before her teammates increased the margin to 4-0 on an unassisted score from Amy D'Eloia (East Northport, N.Y.) at just before the 60-minute mark (59:54). That score remained for the closing 30 minutes, precipitating a 4-0 Lion victory.

Four other Lions joined Verni with multiple shots; D'Eloia led the group with nine. Poetzsch was also among them with four shots. Carty (11-3-1) totaled three saves in the shutout performance.

Iannaiciello did her best to keep the Griffins competitive and recorded her third double digit save effort of the season with 10 stops in tonight's contest.

Chestnut Hill College resumes their CACC schedule on Saturday, November 2, when they visit Felician University for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
