Washington, DC - (11/13/2019) – Chestnut Hill College continued their season-opening road schedule with an early-evening contest at the
University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The Griffins outshot the Firebirds from the floor (49.1% (27-of-55) – 41.2% (28-of-68)) and from three-point range (38.1% (8-of-21) – 28.0% (7-of-25)), as well as outrebounded the home team by a 40-31 margin, but turned the ball over 22 times to suffer a 78-72 loss to UDC. All six Griffins who played finished in double figures; sophomore guard
Juston Bailey (Riverdale, Md.) was the most impressive of the bunch, hitting four from long range (4-of-10, 400 3PT%), grabbing eight rebounds, and handing out three assists, in addition to recording Chestnut Hill College's only defensive statistics (1 block, 2 steals).
Chestnut Hill College (0-3) assumed control of the first half with a Bailey-assisted layup from junior forward
Eli Barrett (Harrisburg, Pa.) just under six minutes into the contest (12-11, 14:36). The Griffins led the rest of the way in the opening frame, expanding their lead to as many as nine points, 31-22 (6:08), on a coast-to-coast rush from freshman guard
Scottie Spann Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.). Bailey, Barrett, and Spann each recorded in the first half, spiriting the Scarlet and Gold to a 38-30 advantage.
In the second half, Chestnut Hill College pushed their advantage to double digits almost immediately as a three point basket from sophomore guard
James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) gave the Griffins a 41-30 lead with 19:22 left to play. The Scarlet and Gold maintained that margin, 44-33, for another minute thanks to a Bailey three pointer with 18:17 remaining. Unfortunately, UDC controlled the contest from that point on, pulling within a point, 46-45, just after the 15-minute mark (14:50), taking the lead, 52-50, just after the 13-minute mark (12:59), and surviving a late Chestnut Hill College rally (69-67, 3:15) with a 11-5 closing run.
Bailey was 5-of-12 (.417) from the field and finished with a team-high 14-points. Rider was also 5-of-12 (.417), hitting three of his shots from long range (3-of-7, .429 3PT%), while recording four rebounds and providing a pair of assists. Spann and sophomore forward
Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) both totaled a dozen (12) points; the former also recorded eight rebounds and three assists, while the latter additional supplied five rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard
Julius Phillips (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds, and an assist, while Barrett finished with 10 points and three rebounds.
