University of New Haven Takes Close Battle with Griffins

PHILADELPHIA (12/11/2019) – Sophomore guard Abbey Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) drained a pair of free throws to bring Chestnut Hill College (3-6, 2-0) level with the University of New Haven as only seconds remained, but the Chargers (8-1) answered on their final possession to pull off a 66-64 non-conference win in Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday.

Four Griffins finished in double figures – led by 18 points from sophomore forward Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) and 15 points off the bench from sophomore forward Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) -- to help the team solve New Haven's stout defense, which came into the contest giving up just 49.5 points per game and allowed a season-high against the Scarlet and Gold.

The matchup was a game of runs, with the University of New Haven consistently gliding into the lead – up by as many as nine points in the first quarter and 11 points in the second quarter – but the Griffins routinely had an answer to trail by a single possession, 33-30, heading into halftime. An eight-point Chargers lead dwindled down to a tie game thanks to a 12-4 Chestnut Hill College run at the end of the third quarter, highlighted by a trio of three-pointers, as well as a three-point play from Miller.

A back-and-forth final quarter saw the Griffins grab their first lead since the opening minutes of the game, but it would come down to the wire. Junior guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) drove to the hoop and gave Chestnut Hill College a one-point lead with a minute to go, but a made field goal and free throw at the other end put the Chargers back up 64-62 with 11 seconds remaining. Spratt was fouled on a three-point attempt with 3.1 remaining in regulation, with the captain draining two of her attempts to tie the game.

However, the University of New Haven would seal its win out of a timeout on a turnaround jumper from the corner by senior forward Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md.). The Griffins could not get a shot off on their final possession as they fell by just two points.

Sophomore guard Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) (11 points), Sebold (14 points), and Hewlett (15 points) all broke into double figures for their third consecutive game. Leading-scorer Miller (18 points) also posted team highs in rebounds (eight) and blocks (two). Spratt tallied five assists to top the Griffins.

Four Chargers finished in double figures, as sophomore guard Camryn Debose (Wellington, Fla.) led the way with 18 points. Wormack and freshman forward Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y.) each posted double-doubles with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla.) dished out 10 assists.

The Griffins have another non-conference clash on Saturday, December 14 against Southern Connecticut State. The game tips off in New Haven, Conn. at 1 p.m.
