Baltimore, Md. - (12/16/2019) – Chestnut Hill College visited National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, Morgan State University for this evening's non-conference tilt. The Bears welcomed the Griffins with a 68.8% (22-of-32) first-half shooting effort that separated them for a 53-26 halftime advantage and an eventual 96-72 win over the Griffins. Leading four Griffins in double figures, sophomore guards
James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) and
Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) finished with 15 points apiece.
Morgan State University (5-8) dominated the glass early, using their extra possessions to pin
Chestnut Hill College (0-10) under a 19-point, 26-7 (10:03), deficit midway through the first half. The Bears' lead reached 20 points a minute later, 30-9 (9:06), and eventually settled at 27 points, 52-26 (0:52), at halftime thanks to 30 points in the paint, 16 points off Griffin turnovers (12), and 12 second-chance points.
After intermission, play evened out. Unfortunately, the damage was done as Morgan State University pushed their lead to as many as 38 points, 69-31 (14:19), before the Scarlet and Gold contingent made their presence felt. Sophomore forward
Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) and Pitts headlined the initial Chestnut Hill College rebuttal that reduced the Bears advantage back to 30 points, 69-39, with 13:22 remaining in the contest. But, the deficit ballooned back to 39 points, 78-39, just after the 11-minute mark (10:54), shrunk to 21 points, 89-68, on a Rider three point basket with two minutes (2:01) left to play, and rested on a 24-point difference when the final horn sounded.
Senior guard Stanley Davis (Chester, Pa.) led Morgan State University with 28 points, 11 rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Three other Bears finished in double figures; junior forward Troy Baxter (Tallahassee, Fla.) recorded 14 points, while sophomore guards Sherwyn Devonish (Blandensburg, Md.) and Isaiah Burke (Bowie, Md.) respectively scored 16 points and 10 points off the Morgan State University bench.
Rider scored a majority of his 15 points from long range as he went 3-of-6 (.500) from beyond the three point line; he also added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals to his scoring. Meanwhile, Pitts scored seven of his 15 points at the free throw line with a 7-of-11 (.636) effort from the charity stripe. Warrick finished with 14 points, one rebound, two assists, and a steal. Freshman guard
Scottie Spann Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the fourth Griffin in double figures; he finished with 13 points, six rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal.
