Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/16/2019) – Chestnut Hill College split league wins in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader home opener against Felician University, 5-10 and 8-0 (5). The Golden Falcons took the first game (10-5), out hitting the Griffins 19-9, but a solid effort from sophomore outfielde
r Devon Horner (Mount Laurel, N.J.) (3 runs, 3 hits, 2 RBI) led the charge that ultimately ended the game in five innings, 8-0.
In game one, Felician University (5-12, 1-1) saw early success scoring three (3-0) runs at the top of the third inning, but a Horner single to right field pushed freshman first baseman
Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) to the Chestnut Hill College's (5-7, 1-1 CACC) first run, 1-3. Unfortunately, the Golden Flacons were able to connect on 16 more hits while the Griffins struggled, ending the first game 5-10.
The roles reversed in the second game, where a single to right field from junior shortstop
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.)
and a single to center field by senior catcher
Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.), put the Griffin's first two tallies on the scoreboard, 2-0. This ignited Chestnut Hill College and they added three more to their lead in the second inning thanks to a Horner triple to right field that brought in both senior third baseman
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman catcher
Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y,) (4-0). Then to round out the inning Reid doubled down the right line earned Horner a run (5-0). The Scarlet and Gold continued to build off of their momentum and in the fourth inning and notch three more points off of a Reid double to center field and a Riotte single to right field sealed their final runs. Senior pitcher
Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) pitched two no-hit innings that silenced the Golden Falcons and allowed for the 8-0 shutout ending the contest in the fifth.
The Griffins continue their CACC schedule on Tuesday, March 19, when they travel to face Jefferson in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
