McWade’s 1,000th Point Serves As Silver Lining in CACC Loss to Devils

Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/2/2019) – Chestnut Hill College's 2018-2019 season ended today, Saturday, March 2, with another highly-competitive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) affair as the Griffins battled the University of the Sciences (USciences) to an 83-79 final. The Devils only turned the ball over eight times and used a superior 13-of-23 (56.5%) free throw effort to edge out the Scarlet and Gold in the final minutes. Two Griffins finished in double figures; freshman guard Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) led Chestnut Hill College with 18 points, but senior forward Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) provided the silver lining to the defeat as he recorded his 1,000 career point in the process of scoring 17 points in today's game.

It was a McWade three pointer with five seconds (0:05) remaining that gave Chestnut Hill College (3-25, 0-19) a 40-39 halftime lead over USciences (11-17, 8-11). The Griffins had led the Devils for most of the opening period, before briefly surrendering the lead on a late layup from senior forward Tanner Kerr (Avalon, N.J.), 35-34 (2:23). USciences pushed their lead to four points, 38-34, on a three pointer from senior forward Branden Hathaway (Owego, N.Y.) with 1:54 remaining on the clock. Fortunately, a free throw (38-35, 1:36) and a layup from freshman forward Alex Rogat (Vienna, Austria), and McWade's last-second three (40-39, 0:05) rewarded the Griffins with the one-point halftime advantage.

Chestnut Hill College continued to pace USciences in the second half, extending their lead to five points, 44-39, on a layup from senior forward Dexter Thompson (Providence, R.I.) at the 18-minute mark (18:00) and maxing it out at eight points, 50-42, on an and-one effort from Pitts at 14:50. But, freshman guard Sean Simon (Philadelphia, Pa.) came off the Devil bench to play hero, scoring the game-tying bucket at 8:53 (59-59) and totaling 21 second-half points to help USciences prevail for the four-point victory.

Simon scored all of his 21 points in the second half and he was efficient, hitting 6-of-8 (.750) from the floor, 4-of-5 (.800) from three, and 5-of-5 (1.000) from the free throw line. He also recorded a rebound, an assist, and a steal. Hathaway finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, and an assist, while senior center Brenden Crawford (Haddonfield, N.J.) offered 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.

McWade's milestone bucket came with 15:59 (47-40) remaining in the second half as he became the ninth 1,000-point scorer in Chestnut Hill College history. He added seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal to his 17-point performance. Meanwhile, Pitts offered seven rebounds and six assists in excess of this team-high 18 points.

Chestnut Hill College concludes their 2018-2019 season at 3-25 overall and 0-19 in CACC play.
