Norristown, Pa. – (3/25/2019) – Chestnut Hill College swept Caldwell University in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matchup at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Michael Perugini (Tamarac, Fla.) sealed their 8-9 and 6-5 (8) wins.
Caldwell University (2-12, 0-6 CACC) edged Chestnut Hill College (8-14, 1-5 CACC) 5-0 by the top of third inning putting them at an early disadvantage. The Griffins finally got on the bored at the bottom of the third inning where they generated three runs (3-5). The Cougars held onto their lead for three more innings (6
th inning) until sophomore catcher
Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) tripled down the left line bringing home Uzzell followed by a sacrifice fly from sophomore outfielder
John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) that pushed Barletta past home plate as well, tying the affair 6-6. At the bottom of the 9
th Caldwell University tacked on two more runs (8-6) putting Chestnut Hill College in a difficult position. Senior catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) and sophomore shortstop
Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) both scored off of back-to-back walks evening the score 8-8. Not frazzled by the situation Uzzell smashed the ball up the middle allowing Perugini to score and end the first contest 9-8.
In the second game, the Cougars got off to a similar start edging the Griffins 3-2 at top of the fourth inning. Runs from freshman second baseman
Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Uzzell deadlocked the contest 4-4 at the bottom of the fourth inning. Caldwell University separated themselves, 5-4, in the 7
th inning putting the pressure on the Griffins to make major power moves to win game two. Up for the challenge, LeBeau's sacrifice flyout to center field brought home Perugini to score and push the contest into an extra inning, 5-5. The visiting team luckily could not reach the home plate during their turn. With the bases loaded Perugini singled to shortstop which brought Barletta in to end the second game 6-5.
Chestnut Hill College continues conference place on the road on Tuesday, March 26, when they visit Wilmington University in a 12:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
