Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/30/2019) - Chestnut Hill College welcomed Concordia College (NY) to campus for this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Griffins won the opener 3-1 thanks to the hustle of junior second baseman
Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.), the clutch hitting of left fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) and junior shortstop
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.), and another strong pitching performance from junior
Kaley Wise (Hamilton, N.J.). In the second game, the Griffins' hard work put into a six-run fourth inning was erased by the misfortunes of a Concordia College (NY) four-run seventh inning, 7-6.
After losing the first game, Concordia College (NY) (7-9, 3-5) was first on the scoreboard in game two as they scored three runs in the fourth inning, 3-0. In the bottom of the frame, Chestnut Hill College (7-11, 3-3) sought retribution and achieved it with six runs. The at-bat began with a leadoff single to centerfield from freshman centerfielder
Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), a single to left field from senior designated player
Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.), a beaming on freshman catcher
Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.), and a single up the middle from senior right fielder
Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) that plated two runs, 3-2. Stevenson followed with a double down the left field line that tacked on two more runs, 4-3, before Magee and Messina brought home two more runs with a pair of base-hits, 6-3. Sophomore pitcher
Gabrielle Merryman (Sewell, N.J.) (0-2) preserved the lead for the next two frames, but in the seventh inning the Griffin were not able to secure the sweep as four Clipper hits, a walk, and two Scarlet and Gold errors allowed Concordia College to steal the win with four runs, 7-6.
Senior third baseman
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) (2-for-4), Magee (2-for-4, 1R, 1RBI), and Swanek (2-for-2, 1R) recorded two hits apiece. Irvin and Stevenson knocked in two runs apiece. Messina and Winn knocked in the other two Griffin runs.
In game one, Stevenson hustled down the first baseline on a sixth-inning bunt to the second baseman, stole second base, tagged up to reach third base on a fly out to right field, and scored as the first of two Griffin runs on back-to-back doubles from Magee and Messina, 3-1. That would be all the run support Wise (5-4) needed to retire Concordia College as she struck out four Clippers while allowing one run on seven hits. The Griffins' first run came on Messina's first collegiate home run, which came with two down in the first inning.
Messina was 2-for-3 with a run and two runs-batted-in (RBI). Magee (1-for-3, 1R, 1RBI) and Stevenson (1-for-2, 1R) recorded the other two Griffin hits.
Chestnut Hill College returns to the campus field tomorrow, Sunday, March 31, for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader versus East Stroudsburg University.
