Wilmington, Del. – (4/24/2019) – A two-run third inning was the difference maker in game two of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom College as a leadoff walk to senior third baseman
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.), bunt singles from sophomore centerfielder
Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and junior shortstop
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.), a sacrifice fly from senior catcher
Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth. N.J.), and a ground out from senior left fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) provided sophomore
Gabrielle Merryman (Sewell, N.J.) with the run support she needed to record her first victory (1-5) of the season; 3-2. Unfortunately, the win only earned Chestnut Hill College a split as the Lightning held the Griffins to just four hits in a 1-0 game-one final.
Chestnut Hill College (16-22, 11-13) put a runner on third base in the third inning, two runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, and another in scoring position in the seventh inning, but could not bring a run home against sophomore Taylor Beres (Middletown, Del.), who allowed four hits and two walks while striking out three in the complete game shutout (7-15). Junior designated player
Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.) (1-for-3), Winn (1-for-3), Riotte (1-for-2), and Horner (1-for-3) were responsible for the Griffins' four hits, while sophomore
Kaley Wise (Hamilton, N.J.) went the distance in the loss (10-8). She allowed one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out one.
The Scarlet and Gold took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two thanks to Magee, who led off the at-bat with a single to the pitcher, stole second base, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from senior designated player
Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.), and run-scoring single to right center from freshman first baseman
Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas). Goldey-Beacom College (9-35, 7-17) responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 2-1 lead, but the Griffins' two-run third inning put Merryman back in the driver's seat, 3-2. She held the Lightning to four hits and a walk over their final five at-bats to seal the deal.
Chestnut Hill College concludes their regular season and CACC schedules on Saturday, April 27, when they visit Nyack College for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
