Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/3/2019) – With 20 strikeouts between sophomores
Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) and
Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) and variety of contributions from the lineup, Chestnut Hill College enjoyed a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victories – 14-5 and 7-3 – over the University of the Sciences (USciences) this afternoon. Bethel dominated the Devils in game one, scattering five hits over seven innings while totaling a career-high 10 strike outs. Meanwhile, sophomore centerfielder
John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) was 5-for-6 with two doubles and a triple, providing Bethel with four runs and three runs-batted-in (RBI) of support in his fourth victory (4-3) of the season. Soon after, Hughes held the Devils to three runs – two earned – on six hits and a pair of walks, while matching Bethel's 10-strikeout total. A four-run fourth inning provided Hughes with all the support he would need as a single from senior designated hitter
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), a two-run triple from junior third baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), and an error by the USciences shortstop gave the Griffins a commanding 6-3 advantage.
While Bethel dealt on the mound, the Chestnut Hill College (12-16, 7-7) offense drove in two runs in the first inning (2-0), three runs in the third inning (5-0), two runs in the fourth inning (7-0), two runs in the sixth inning (9-0), and five runs in the eighth inning (14-0). USciences (11-16, 7-7) was forced to wait until Bethel left the game to get on the scoreboard as they platted five ninth-inning runs in a fleeting comeback effort against the Griffin bullpen. Contoudis singled and scored in the first and third innings, doubled a run home and scored in the fourth inning, tripled in a run in the sixth inning, and doubled in a run in the eighth inning. Uzzell was 3-for-6 and scored twice. Sophomores, shortstop
Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) and first baseman
Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) both were 2-for-5; the former scored twice and knocked in four runs, while the latter scored twice and knocked in two runs.
In game two, Chestnut Hill College's four-run fourth inning was the difference maker. It delivered the Griffins a 6-3 lead that carried them to their eventual 7-3 triumph. Hughes (1-2) earned his first win of the season as a result. In the first inning, a two-out single from Contoudis and a following double from senior catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) provided the first Scarlet and Gold run, 1-0. USciences responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, 2-1, and each side scored a run in the third inning, 3-2, before the Griffins' fourth inning success. There, a one-out walk to senior left fielder
Franklin Ramirez (Reading, Pa.), an error by the Devil pitcher, and a Small single delivered the first Chestnut Hill College run, 3-3. After that, a Small stolen base, a double from freshman second baseman
Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.), an Uzzell triple (5-3), and an error by the Devil shortstop gave the Griffins a 6-3 advantage. Dietz homered in the fifth inning to push the spread to 7-3. That would be more than enough for Hughes, who went the distance for his first win of the season. Gilham (2-for-3) and LeBeau (2-for-4) were the only Griffins to record multiple hits.
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule versus USciences on Friday, April 5, when they welcome the Devils to Latshaw-McCarthy Field for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
