Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) to win game two by a 6-5 measure. The Bears beat the Griffins by the same score in the opener, 6-5, thanks to a pair of one-out extra-base hits. Sophomore centerfielder
Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) led the Scarlet and Gold, going 4-for-8 with three runs and three runs-batted-in (RBI). Senior
Jessica Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) earned the win (1-1) in game two with senior
Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) collecting her first collegiate save (1) with a perfect seventh inning.
Bloomfield College (9-18, 6-8) scored the first run of the afternoon in the second inning of game one, 1-0, but Chestnut Hill College (9-17, 4-8) answered with a three-run third inning. Horner got the Griffins started with a one-out single up the middle. She moved to second base on an infield single from junior shortstop
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.), and to third base on a wild pitch, before hustling home on a three-run triple from senior catcher
Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth. N.J.), 3-1. The Bears tied the affair with a two-run fourth inning, 3-3, and a run apiece in the fifth inning left the score a 4-4 heading to the sixth. There, Chestnut Hill College took a 5-4 lead on a Horner double only to give way in the seventh inning, where Bloomfield College earned the win, 6-5, with three straight one-out hits. Horner was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Bloomfield College scored first in the second game as well, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning, 2-0. Chestnut Hill College got them back in the third inning, thanks to a Bear error, a Messina walk, a two-run double from senior first baseman
Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.), 2-2. The Griffins continued to take control in the fourth inning with three more runs; the at-bat began with a leadoff double from Magee and continued a sacrifice bunt from junior second baseman
Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.), a walk to senior third baseman
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.), a stolen base, a two-run double from Horner, 4-2, and a Swanek double to left center, 5-2. Unfortunately, the Bears tied the score by the seventh inning with two tallies in the fifth, 5-4, and one sixth, 5-5. In their final at-bat, Chestnut Hill College plated the eventual winning run with a leadoff single from Swanek, a beaming of Riotte, a sacrifice bunt from senior right fielder
Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.), and Magee's sacrifice fly, 6-5. Irvin took care of the rest, retiring the Bears with a series of pop outs. Swanek was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, Horner was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and Magee was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run, and an RBI.
Chestnut Hill College continues a busy week tomorrow, Sunday, April 7, with a noon (12:00 p.m.) CACC doubleheader at Caldwell University.
