Barletta Belts Three-Run Shot, But Griffins Drop CACC Opening Round Contest at #2N Dominican College

Pomona, N.Y. - (5/4/2019) – As the #3 seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division, Chestnut Hill College visited #2N Dominican College for today's Opening Round contest. The Chargers used a four-run first inning and individuals runs in the fourth and sixth innings to defeat the Griffins, 6-4. They benefitted from a strong relief effort from senior John-Michael Broderick (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.), who held the Scarlet and Gold scoreless over the final 4.2 frames; allowing only a seventh-inning leadoff single to sophomore Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and a ninth-inning leadoff walk to sophomore left fielder Michael Perugini (Tamarac, Fla.). Four Griffins offered multi-hit performances, including Barletta, whose fifth-inning three-run home run temporarily tied the contest at 4-4.

Five hits and an error precipitated four Dominican College (27-23) runs in the first inning, 4-0. Chestnut Hill College (27-22) got a run back in the fourth inning with leadoff single from senior catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.), some hustle on the base paths, and a two-out single down the left field line from freshman designated hitter Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.), 4-1. Unfortunately, the Chargers matched the tally in the bottom of the frame, 5-1, to provide enough coverage for Barletta's fifth-inning, three-run home run, 5-4. Dominican College added an insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth inning and relied on Broderick's relief pitching to carry them to a 6-4 victory.

Junior shortstop Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) (2-for-5, 1R), Barletta (2-for-5, 2R, 3RBI), Gilham (2-for-4, 1R), and LeBeau (2-for-4, 1RBI) each recorded two hits in the affair. Sophomores, Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) provided seven innings of strong relief for Chestnut Hill College, splitting six strikeouts while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks.

Chestnut Hill College finishes the 2019 season at 27-23 overall and a program-best 21-11 in CACC play.
