LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. (02/22/2020) – Chestnut Hill College men's lacrosse fell Saturday for the first time in 2020, dropping its non-conference clash against No. 4 Mercyhurst, 17-10. The Griffins (2-1) hung around in the first half, but a pair of second-half scoring runs for the Lakers (3-0) sealed the team's road triumph on Victory Field No. 1.
Mercyhurst immediately threw down the gauntlet, scoring the first three goals of the game and opening up a 6-2 lead early in the second period. The Scarlet and Gold refused to go away, though, clawing within a two-goal deficit on several occasions and trailing by just three heading into the halftime locker room.
The Lakers would manage to finally put the game out of reach in the second half. They opened the third period on a 4-0 scoring run, highlighted by two goals up a man. Chestnut Hill College cut the lead to four to start the final period, but another 4-0 Mercyhurst scoring run finished off the Griffins, who tallied just one goal in the final quarter.
Chestnut Hill College's sophomore goalie
Jake Miller (Castle Rock, Colo.) recorded 20 saves, including 13 in the first half, to help keep the Scarlet and Gold within reach through much of the game.
Three Griffin junior attackmen –
Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia),
Maurice Kelly (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta), and
Scott Wilden (Wexford, Pa.) – scored hat tricks. Rees, who tacked on two assists, led the team with five points. Fellow junior attackman
J.R. Howell (East Meadow, N.Y.) led the team with three assists.
The Scarlet and Gold begin a two-game road stretch at noon on Saturday, February 29 against Davis and Elkins College.
