Scarlet and Gold Scores Three Free Position Goals in Loss at NYIT

Old Westbury, N.Y. - (2/25/2020) – Chestnut Hill College continued their recently started 2020 season with this afternoon's contest at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). The Bears welcomed the Griffins with eight straight scores as a yellow-card free position goal from freshman midfielder Danielle Vassallo (Hicksville, N.Y.) interrupted their opening run midway through the first half; 8-1 (15:53). Afterwards, NYIT led the Scarlet and Gold to a 15-1 halftime spread and 19-3 conclusion with the additional Chestnut Hill College tallies coming on another yellow-card free position goal from senior attack Spencer Fitzgerald (Huntingtown, Md.) (15-2, 28:59) and a concluding free position goal from senior attack Haley Norwillo (Duryea, Pa.) (19-3, 4:20).

NYIT (1-0) outshot Chestnut Hill College (0-2) by a 23-4 edge in the first half; the differential allowed the Bears to stockpile an eight-goal lead, 8-0 (17:28), over the first 13 minutes. Vassallo led a Scarlet and Gold rally off the ensuing draw and capped a series of Griffin free position goals with the second goal of her collegiate career; 8-1 (15:53). The Bears answered the Chestnut Hill College tally with seven scores before halftime, 15-1 (6:32), but the Griffins took solace in a late NYIT yellow card (0:00). After intermission, Fitzgerald was able draw and convert a free position shot on the power play, welcoming the new Bear goalkeeper with the second Scarlet and Gold goal of the game; 15-2 (28:59). But, NYIT used the next 17 minutes to expand their lead to 17 goals, 19-2 (11:32), leaving Norwillo's free position goal as a parting shot in a 19-3 (4:20) final.

Senior attack Shannon Donovan (Kings Park, N.Y.) led NYIT in scoring with four goals, but the Bears top player was sophomore attack Jacklyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y.), who recorded three goals, three assists, and three ground balls. Sophomore defender Grace Guglielmo (West Babylon, N.Y.) (8 draw controls) and graduate defender Ashley Claud (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) (7) split eight ground balls and combined for 17 draw controls, while sophomore Ashley Perrini (Holbrook, N.Y.) (1-0) and freshman Kristinamarie Kaszovitz (Hicksville, N.Y.) split the minutes in goal and the Bears' four saves.

Norwillo led the Griffins with four of their 10 shots; two, including her concluding score came on the free position. Fitzgerald scored on the first of her three shots. She also recorded a ground ball and two caused turnovers.  Likewise, Vassallo added two draws to her goal. Senior Sabrina Shinkowitz (Stratford, N.J.), junior Angela Faraglia (Clifton Heights, Pa.), and freshman Madyson Schwartz (Philadelphia, Pa.) helped Fitzgerald on the defensive end; the first recorded a ground ball and two caused turnovers; the second, a ground ball and a caused turnover; and the third, a ground ball, a draw control, and a caused turnover. Freshman goalkeeper Mel Amador (Cape May, N.J.) (0-2) made nine saves and recovered three ground balls.
