Griffins Valiant in Regular-Season Finale Loss to No. 16 USciences

PHILADELPHIA (2/29/2020) – Chestnut Hill College women's basketball went toe-to-toe with No. 16 USciences, which finished as the top seeds in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) south division, but could not catch the Devils (25-3, 18-1) in a 61-53 loss.

The Griffins (11-17, 10-9) had three players finish in double figures – with sophomore guard Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) leading the team with 14 points, while sophomore forwards Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) and Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) put up 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Junior guard Irisa Ye (North Wales, Pa.) was the difference for USciences, putting up 28 points and recording four steals to play a crucial role in the game.

Despite jumping out to a 12-3 lead, the Devils never led by more than nine in the first half. The Griffins three-point presence – shooting three-of-seven – and success at the foul line helped keep their opponents within reach.

USciences went into the break leading 36-27, but the Griffins would not go away in the second half. They used a pair of three-pointers from Hewlett to stay in striking distance in the third quarter. Chestnut Hill College came within a single possession of tying the game, but USciences would eventually find its form down the stretch, extending its lead to double figures in the waning minutes.

The Griffins shot 38.1 percent in the game and knocked down 14-of-15 of their free throws. Crim's 14 points increased her season average to a team second-best 13.2 points per game. Hewlett's double figure outing off the bench was almost good enough for a double-double, with her 11 points and nine rebounds leaving her just a board shy.

The Scarlet and Gold are CACC playoff bound, earning the fourth seed in the CACC south division. The team will face the north's top-seeded Post University at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3 in the quarterfinals on the conference's championship tournament.
