ELKINS, W. Va. (3/1/2020) – Chestnut Hill College men's lacrosse (3-1) scored an onslaught of goals once again to find itself back in the win column on Saturday with a 24-7 victory over Davis & Elkins College.
24 goals is the second most scored in a game by the Scarlet and Gold in the program's history, placed behind a 27-goal outing from the 2020 season opener.
Six Griffins tallied multiple goals – including a seven-goal outing from junior attackman
Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and a five-goal outing from junior attackman
Maurice Kelly (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) – to push by the Senators (0-4).
Davis & Elkins kept it close in the opening quarter, but Chestnut Hill College scored seven-straight goals in the second quarter and held the Senators to just a single tally in the to go into halftime with an 11-3 lead.
Another prolific quarter in the third, highlighted by Rees registering a point on six of the team's nine goals, helped effectively put the game out of reach. Sophomore goalie
Jake Miller (Castle Rock, Colo.) made 11 saves in just under three quarters of work to help post the Griffins' largest margin of victory of the season.
Rees posted a career-high 10 points (seven goals and three assists) to record the second-highest point total in a single game in program history.
Juniors
Ben Revak (Aston, Pa.) and
J.R. Howell (East Meadow, N.Y.) matched Rees for the game-high in assists, with each player tallying three. Revak scored four goals to finish the game with seven points, while Howell tacked on two goals for a total of five points.
Freshman attackman
Nate Matthews (Rancho Murieta, Calif.) scored on each of his three shot attempts to record his first career hat trick. He also tallied an assist to finish the game with four points.
The Scarlet and Gold's success started on faceoffs, with the Griffins winning 26 of the 35. Taking 18 of the faceoffs, junior
Stephen Lopuzzo (Ringoes, N.J.) won 15 to consistently earn possession for the team.
Chestnut Hill College will travel to another West Virginia school, Alderson Broaddus University, for a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3.
