Third Inning Run Powers Griffins to Shutout Win over Barry University

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (3/2/2020) – A big third inning helped Chestnut Hill College baseball (3-1) run away with a 9-0 win over Barry University (11-4) on Monday night during the team's season-opening spring break trip.

Junior pitcher Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) got the start on the mound and threw seven scoreless innings in his season debut. Senior infielder Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) and junior infielder Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Griffins' hot bats, with each tallying three hits in five trips to the plate. The team as a whole knocked 12 hits to record 11 or more hits for the fourth straight game to open the year.

The Griffins got on the board in the first inning after junior outfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch.

After a trio of RBIs via a Contoudis sacrifice fly, a Healey double, and a single from junior first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) in the third inning to make it 4-0, sophomore Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) hit a three-run shot over the left center field wall to effectively put the Griffins in control.

The Scarlet and Gold tacked on its final two runs in the fourth thanks to a RBI double from junior catcher Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.).

Shaffer did his job in the circle, conceding just four hits before senior Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) retired six of the eight batters he faced in relief to close out the win.

Chestnut Hill College faces off with Barry University once more at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3.
