Queens College Bests Griffins in Three-Setter, Tiebreaker-Filled Match

FLUSHING, N.Y. (3/6/2020) – Despite a tight match that consisted of a trio of three setters in the singles ties and the winner of both doubles sets needing to reach seven games, Chestnut Hill College men's tennis fell to Queens College, 5-2.

The Griffins (2-3) received a pair of solid wins toward the upper flights of the singles matches, but the Knights (6-1) showed their depth to grind out several crucial wins to earn their sixth consecutive victory of the spring slate.

Scarlet and Gold senior Tom Pitchley (London England) won the opening set of his first flight singles match in a tiebreak – edging Queens College sophomore Kareem Rashad (Alexandria, Egypt), who was previously undefeated in dual match play against non-Division I opponents. Pitchley carried the momentum of his 12-10 tiebreak triumph to take the second set, 6-4.

After winning his singles and doubles ties Thursday against Saint Thomas Aquinas College, senior Antoine Gautier (Bordeaux, France) pulled off the same feat again against the Knights. At third flight singles, Gautier came from a set behind to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over junior Eduardo Marino (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Gautier partnered with junior Kiki Dagneaux (Saint-Gervasy, France) for a tiebreak win at second flight doubles.

Without a team at third flight doubles, the set win in the second flight wasn't enough to secure the doubles point as Pitchley and senior Erik Jorsal (Mudgeeraba, Australia) fell in first flight doubles, 7-5.

Dagneaux dropped his first set at second flight singles 6-0, but battled the second set to a tiebreaker. He could not emerge victorious, though, dropping it 7-4. Jorsal and sophomore Kai Adler (Leer, Germany) went three sets in fourth and fifth flight singles, respectively, falling in both matches.

The Griffins play their first home match of 2020 at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9 against the University of the District of Columbia. The match is a doubleheader with the Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team.
