Griffins Split With Firebirds Thanks to Late Rally in Men’s Singles

Philadelphia, Pa. - (3/9/2020) – Chestnut Hill College served as host to a pair of matches this afternoon as they welcomed the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) men's and women's tennis teams to campus for dual a competition. The Firebirds won the women's side, defeating the Griffins by a 7-0 final. The men's match was more competitive with the Scarlet and Gold taking the doubles round before winning the final three singles matches to comeback for a 4-2 victory over the Firebirds.

In the women's match, UDC (13-2) won both number one doubles and number two doubles matches from Chestnut Hill College (6-9) by 6-0 finals. Freshman Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.) held out longest in the top team flight. The Firebirds 6-0, 6-0, win at number two singles clinched the match for the visitors, they added additional individual wins at number four singles (8-0), number three singles (6-0, 6-0), and number one singles (6-3, 7-6 (7-0)). Garcia Arguelles gave a valiant effort in the top singles flight, battling to a 6-3 loss in the first set and a 7-6 (7-0) tiebreaker loss in the second set.

Chestnut Hill College (3-3) got off to a better start on the men's side, taking the doubles point from UDC (4-7) thanks to back-to-back wins in the first (6-3) and second (7-6 (7-2)) flights; sophomore Tom Pitchley (London, England) and junior Erik Jorsal (Mudgeeraba, Australia) were triumphant at number one, while senior Antoine Gautier (Bordeaux, France) and junior Kiki Dagneaux (Saint-Gervasy, France) succeeded at number two. A double default in the sixth singles flight kicked off the individual round. It was followed by a consecutive Firebirds wins at number two singles (6-4, 0-6, 6-3) and number one singles (6-3, 7-6 (7-5)) that briefly gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage. The Griffins evened the match, 2-2, with a 6-0, 6-0, number five singles win from sophomore Kai Adler (Leer, Germany) and followed it up with Gautier and Jorsal respectively earning the last two points of the afternoon in the third (4-6, 6-2, 7-5) and fourth (7-6 (7-5), 6-3) flights.

Chestnut Hill College continues their schedule on Saturday, March 14, when they host Loyola University (Md.) in a 12:00 p.m. match. The competition also serves as Senior Day for the Griffin women, who will celebrate the careers of Barbara Broville (Toulouse, France) and Nicole Yang (Blue Bell, Pa.).
