MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (3/7/2020) -- Chestnut Hill College baseball (4-5) finished its spring break trip splitting a doubleheader against Florida Memorial University (6-12).
The Lions took the first game of the day, jumping out to an early lead and holding on for a 5-2 win. The Griffins scored a 3-1 win in the final game of the series thanks to a quick start and a solid pitching effort from three members of the team's staff.
Game One
Two hits were enough to secure two runs for Florida Memorial University in the bottom of the first inning. After a double from junior Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) to get the Griffins on the board, the Lions would tack on three runs across the third and fourth innings, including an RBI triple from senior outfielder Jouseph Renovales (Juana, Puerto Rico).
The Scarlet and Gold crossed the plate once more in the sixth inning thanks to hits from juniors Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) before a fielder's choice and error brought Barletta home. It wouldn't be enough, as the Lions earned the 5-2 win in the seven-inning outing.
Game Two
Chestnut Hill College kickstarted a two-out rally in the first inning thanks to a Contoudis single up the middle. After junior infielder Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) walked, the two would score on a Florida Memorial University error by the third baseman.
The Griffins conceded a run in the second inning, but that was the extent of the damage the Lions could cause. The Scarlet and Gold's pitching trio of junior Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.), and senior Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), who recorded the save, gave up just a single run off eight hits in the seven-inning game.
Contoudis knocked a sacrifice fly in the top of the final inning to pad Chestnut Hill College's lead, finishing the game with a 3-1 win.
Up Next
The Griffins begin their home schedule at noon Saturday, March 14 against Lincoln University.
