Griffins Defeat Tigers 66-63 to Win CACC Opener

Three players scored in double figures as the Chestnut Hill women's basketball team held off holy Family University to earn a 66-63 win Wednesday night in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener at the Campus Center on Holy Family's campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in CACC games.  Chestnut Hill has now won six of their last seven CACC openers.  The Tigers fall to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Leah Miller led all scorers with 16 points while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Morgan Orloski came off the bench to score 15 points while Cassie Sebold added 11.  Sebold dished out five assists and tied her career high with eight rebounds.

The Griffins opened a nine-point lead in the second quarter and led by the same margin three times until the final two minutes when the Tigers scored the final seven points to close the gap to two 29-27 at halftime.

A 13-2 run by the Griffins to open the third quarter pushed the lead to double digits, 42-29.  Orloski opened the scoring with a pair of three-point buckets and Sebold followed with three-ball of her own.  Miller then added two baskets to push the lead to 13.  A 10-3 run by the Tigers followed, cutting Chestnut Hill's lead to six 45-39 with 2:08 left.  Sebold followed with her second three-point basket of the night before the Tigers shaved a couple of points off the lead by the end of the period as the Griffins entered the final period up seven 50-43.

The Tigers rallied to tie the game at 61-61 with 3:41 remaining in regulation and took the lead for the first time since the first quarter with a Moe Moore (10 points) layup with 2:47 left.  Sebold followed with a layup and Miller followed with a 17-foot jumper to put the Griffins back in front 65-63.  Sebold added a free throw with 15 seconds left to round out the scoring and seal the win, 66-63.

For the game, the Griffins shot 40% (26-65) from the field while the Tigers made 39% (23-59) of their shots.  The Tigers made one more three-point basket (7-6) and two more free throws (10-8) while the Griffins held a 40-37 rebounding edge.

The Chestnut Hill Women's Basketball team will return to action on Saturday, December 4, 2021 when they play their first home game of the season, hosting Goldey-Beacom College at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set to 1:00 p.m.
