Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Well Balanced Offense Propels Griffins to Victory over Holy Family in CACC Opener

A well-balanced offense that saw six different players score at least eight points and some timely defense in the final minutes of the game propelled the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team to a 67-58 win over Holy Family University Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

The win was the Griffins first in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opening game since the 2016-17 season as well as third third straight victory over the Tigers, having swept the season series in 2019-20.  The Griffins improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Tigers fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in league contests.  The win was also just the Griffins third win at Holy Family since 2003.

Nigel Haughton led all players with 14 points while Amir Warrick and MJ Iraldi added 12 and 10 respectively.  David Erebor chipped in nine points and grabbed ten rebounds.  Conor Regan led the team with 11 rebounds while scoring eight points.  Trevonn Pitts came off the bench to score eight points. Regan also dished out a team high four assists and recorded three blocks.

Warrick scored ten of his 12 points in the first half as the Griffins, who trailed by as many as three early in the game, opened up a nine point lead late in the half, following a Warrick three point basket.. 29-20 at the 2:28 mark.  The Tigers shaved just two points off the lead as the Griffins took a 36-29 lead into the locker room at the break.

Holy Family slowly whittled away at the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, outscoring the Griffins 13-4 in the first 5:21 to take a 42-40 lead. Regan changed the lead back to the griffins on their next possession with a three-point basket, 43-42, starting a 15-3 uprising that saw the Griffins take a double-digit lead, 55-45 with 9:27 left, following a Noah Charles three-point basket.  The Griffins still led by ten when the Tigers exploded with a 10-2 spurt to pull within two 59-57 with 2:45 left.  The Griffin defense then went to work, holding the Tigers without a field goal over that final 2:45 while outscoring their hosts 8-2 down the stretch.  The Griffins made six straight free throws in the final 1:07 to seal the win with Pitts' two makes from the charity stripe with ten seconds left providing the final pointas in the 67-58 victory.

Free throw shooting and rebounding were two keys in the Griffins win.  CHC made 22 of 28 free throws, while the Tigers made just seven of 14.  Rebounding wise the Griffins won the battle of the glass 42-28.  The Tigers made four more three-point shots but that was not enough to negate the Griffins big advantage from the free throw line.

The Chestnut Hill Men's Basketball team will return to action on Saturday, December 4, 2021 when they host Goldey-Beacom College at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set to 1:00
