Barry Battles in Game-One Pitcher’s Duel, But Griffins Drop Doubleheader to Marauders

Millersville, Pa. - (3/11/2021) – Taking advantage of the early spring weather, Chestnut Hill College visited Millersville University to officially open their 2021 schedule with an afternoon doubleheader. The Marauders used first-inning runs to gain the upper hand in both affairs, first outlasting the Griffins in a 2-0 pitcher's duel and later earning a 7-0 victory in game two. Senior Julianna Barry (Northridge, Calif.) limited Millersville University to two runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out five in the game-one loss (0-1, 6.0IP).

A pair of triples helped Millersville University (4-2) score two runs in their first at-bat of the twin bill, 2-0. Meanwhile, Chestnut Hill College (0-2) got a runner in scoring position during a third-inning at-bat where a two-out single from junior shortstop Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.) (1-for-3) and a beaning of junior catcher Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) put two Griffins aboard before a fly out to right field. The Scarlet and Gold had another opportunity to score in the fifth inning thanks to a one-out double from sophomore right fielder Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) (1-for-2), but again their efforts were foiled as senior Maddie Guinane (Brackney, Pa.) denied the rally and completed her shutout (2-0) with a dozen (12) strikeouts.

The Marauders scored five runs in the first inning of game two, 5-0, and added additional tallies in the fourth, 6-0, and sixth innings, 7-0. Senior right fielder Megan Jankiewicz (Clearwater, Fla.) (1-for-3) recorded the only Scarlet and Gold hit of the affair with her third-inning, one-out single to right field. She moved to second base on a fielder's choice, but end the inning on her way to third base. Chestnut Hill College also had chances to put runs on the scoreboard in the fifth and seventh innings, but they were unable to close the gap on Millersville University.

Chestnut Hill College opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) on Saturday, March 20, when the welcome Post University to campus for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
