Philadelphia, Pa. - (3/20/2021) – The final frame was pivotal in each of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests as Post University scored eight seventh-inning runs to take the opener, 9-1, and five seventh-inning runs to steal the second game, 8-5. Sophomore second baseman Peyton Baldwin (Conshohocken, Pa.) was 2-for-3 with a run scored in game one, while junior catcher Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) (2-for-4, 1R, 1RBI) and senior shortstop Nadine Arredondo (Stephenville, Texas) (2-for-4, 1R, 2RBI) each recorded two hits in game two.
Post University (2-0, 2-0) used a leadoff walk, a hit batswomen, a sacrifice, and a two-out single to score a run in their second at-bat of the afternoon, 1-0. Chestnut Hill College (0-4, 0-2) answered in the fifth inning, where Baldwin doubled and moved to third base on a single from senior pitcher Taylor Carter (Fort Washington, Pa.), before crossing the plate on a successful double-steal, 1-1. But everything went wrong in the seventh inning as the Eagles netted eight runs on six hits and an error to precipitate a 9-1 final. Carter (6.2 IP) allowed one run on eight hits and two walks, but was left with no decision.
The Eagles scored a run in the first inning of game two, 1-0, and held that lead until adding a second in the fourth inning, 2-0. But in the bottom of the fourth frame, Chestnut Hill College tied the affair thanks to back-to-back singles from junior third baseman Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.) and Arredondo, a walk to sophomore catcher Haley Furlong (Point Pleasant, N.J.), a run-scoring fielder's choice, 2-1, and a single through the right side from senior pitcher Julianna Barry (Northridge, Calif.), 2-2. Post University reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning, 3-2, but again the Griffins answered with a pair of runs on a leadoff single to Grillo, a Baldwin sacrifice, an Eagle error, and a two-run single from Arredondo, 4-2. Another Scarlet and Gold run scored in the sixth inning, 5-3, but it was all for not as Post University erupted for five seventh-inning runs to complete their CACC sweep, 8-5.
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Thursday, March 25, when they visit Goldey-Beacom College for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
