Philadelphia, Pa. - (3/13/2021) – The Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams hosted Loyola University (Md.) to the Campus Courts for today's home-opening dual match. The Griffins and Greyhounds split the twin bill with visitors winning the women's side by a 6-1 edge and the Scarlet and Gold scoring a victory on the men's side, 4-3. Only junior
Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.) won Chestnut Hill College's only point in the women's match as she claimed the sixth singles flight by default. Meanwhile, the men's match came down to the wire with freshman
Domagoj Dugandzic (Stuttgart, Germany) and junior
Mark Gladkyy (Franklinville, N.J.) respectively scoring the game-winning points in the fourth (6-1, 6-4) and fifth (6-4, 6-4) singles flights.
Vassalluzzo and sophomore
Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) battled to a 6-4 loss at number three doubles, but Loyola University (1-0) had already secured the doubles point with wins in the first, 6-0, and second, 6-2, flights. The match score tied momentarily with Vassalluzzo's default win at number six singles, 1-1, but the Greyhounds did not let the stalemate last long as they score points in the second (6-0, 6-3), first (7-5, 6-3), third (3-6, 7-5, 6-0), fourth (6-4, 6-3), and fifth (6-2, 1-6, 11-9) individual flights to defeat Chestnut Hill College (0-2) by a 6-1 measure.
On the men's side, Chestnut Hill College (1-1) overcame a default loss in the third flight with doubles wins in the first (6-3) and second (7-6) flights, 1-0. The point would come in handy as Loyola University (0-1) was awarded the sixth singles flight by default, 1-1. Senior
Kiki Dagneaux (Saint-Gervasy, France) got the Griffins the lead back with his 6-0, 6-4, win at number two doubles, 2-1, but consecutive Greyhound victories in the first (6-3, 6-3) and third (6-4, 6-1) singles made the concluding wins from Dugandzic and Gladkyy all the more paramount, 4-3.
Chestnut Hill College continues their women's tennis schedule on Wednesday, March 17, when they welcome the University of Sciences (USciences) to campus for a 2:30 p.m. Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match. Meanwhile, the men's tennis team resumes their schedule on Sunday, March 21 with a league match at Dominican College.
