Chestnut Hill College Rally Falls Short at Kutztown University

Kutztown, Pa. - (3/17/2021) – Chestnut Hill College visited Kutztown University for this afternoon's nine-inning affair. There, the Golden Bears claimed an 8-4 win by using a seven-run fourth inning as insurance against the Scarlet and Gold's seventh and eighth-inning success. Junior first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) was 3-for-4 as the first Griffin run in the seventh and the last Griffin to record a hit in a three-run eighth inning.

Kutztown University (8-1) got on the scoreboard in the third inning, using a leadoff triple, a walk, and a wild pitch, 1-0. They added to their advantage in the fourth inning, where a leadoff walk and a hit batsman eventually turned into seven runs on four hits.

Chestnut Hill College (3-3) put a runner in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, but were not able to get a run across until the seventh inning. There, Dietz led off with a double to centerfield and stole third base before hustling home on a wild pitch, 8-1. Unfortunately, it was the only run the Griffins could muster in the inning as the Golden Bears caught the Scarlet and Gold stealing third prior to an inning-ending strikeout.

Chestnut Hill College tried to make up for it in the eighth inning. Where, a one-out double from senior second baseman Patrick Meenan (Oreland, Pa.), a walk to junior catcher Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.), and a second double from junior centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) drove home the first of three Scarlet and Gold runs, 8-2. A balk and a sacrifice fly from senior left fielder Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) later, Chestnut Hill College trailed Kutztown University by an 8-4 measure. Unfortunately, the Golden Bears recorded the final out of the at-bat before the Griffins could get any closer.

Juniors Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) and Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) provided quality relief appearances for the Scarlet and Gold. The former held Kutztown University scoreless over three innings of work; he allowed four hits and struck out three. The latter worked a scoreless ninth inning; he allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out two.

Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Tuesday, March 23, when they visit Goldey-Beacom College their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season-opener. The twin bill begins with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
