Griffin Home Runs Overshadowed As Cougars Walk-Off CACC Sweep

Caldwell, N.J. - (4/10/2021) – After dropping the opener 14-0 in five innings, Chestnut Hill College sought redemption in the second game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) at Caldwell University. There, they matched the Cougars in the first frame, 3-3, and took a late 7-5 lead on a two-run home run from sophomore first baseman Emma Peterson (Reading, Pa.), before the Caldwell University walked it off with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, 8-7.

Sophomore left fielder Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) (1-for-2), senior third baseman Nadine Arredondo (Stephenville, Texas) (1-for-2), and junior designated player Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.) (1-for-2) recorded the only Chestnut Hill College (1-15, 1-13) hits in the opener. Arredondo led off the second inning with a single to third, but was out on a double play.  Later, Toro led off the fourth inning with a single to centerfield, but was out on a fielder's choice before O'Byrne singled with two out.

In game two, Toro and senior centerfielder Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) set the table for a three-run Griffin first inning with a pair of one-out base-hits. They scored on an Arredondo three-run home run that immediately sent the Cougars to their bullpen. Unfortunately, Caldwell University answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, 3-3. Chestnut Hill College gained an edge in the third inning with an O'Byrne's two-out double down the right field line, 4-3, only for the Cougars to flip the script with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, 5-4. The Scarlet and Gold evened the contest again in the fifth inning with another O'Byrne single, 5-5, and took a brief 7-5 lead in the seventh inning with Peterson's two-run bomb. Unfortunately, the Cougars led off the bottom of the frame with a single to third that complicated with a throwing error, a single to left field, 7-6, a triple to right, 7-7, and a walk-off single back to the pitcher, 8-7.

The home runs were the only hits for Arredondo (1-for-3, 3 R, 1 RBI) and Peterson (1-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI), while Horner (4-for-4, 2 2B, 3 R) and O'Byrne (4-for-4, R, 2 RBI) both record four hits.

Chestnut Hill College briefly breaks from their CACC schedule to visit East Stroudsburg University for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 13.
