Orangeburg, N.Y. - (4/18/2021) – Chestnut Hill College visited Dominican College today, April 18, for an afternoon of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball. The Chargers shutout the Scarlet and Gold in the opener, 3-0, and erased two Griffin runs in the first inning of game two with the next nine tallies of a 9-3 final. Junior pitcher/shortstop Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.Y.) recorded four hits (4-for-7) in the twin bill.
Petroski led off the afternoon with a single up the middle. Unfortunately, she was caught stealing just pitches later. Junior first baseman Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) singled in the second and fifth innings, but failed to reach second base in both cases. Chestnut Hill College (1-19, 1-15) finally got a runner in scoring position in the sixth inning, where a one-out Petroski single was backed up by a two-out single down the left field line from senior centerfielder Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.). Still, Dominican College (13-9, 12-2) got out of trouble with pick off from junior Shelby Smith (Valley Center, Calif.). She would eventually compete her shutout (5-3) with nine strikeouts. Reid was strong in defeat (1-4), allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out five Chargers.
In game two, sophomore second baseman Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) singled with one out in the Griffins' first at-bat. She moved to second on a Horner walk and third on a ground out before a beaning of Reid loaded the bases. Junior catcher Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) brought two Scarlet and Gold runs home with her single to left center, 2-0, but never reached home herself. After, Dominican College cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame, 2-1, and plated eight more runs, 9-2, before senior third baseman Nadine Arredondo (Stephenville, Texas) made use of seventh-inning singles from Petroski and Toro with her one-out single through the right side, 9-3. Unfortunately, the Chestnut Hill College rally finished shy of its target with a pair of swinging strikeouts. Petroski and Toro were both 2-for-4 with a run.
Chestnut Hill College returns to their home field on Tuesday, April 20, to host the University of the Sciences in a 12:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
