Griffins Begin Busy Week With CACC Twin Bill Against Tigers

Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/28/2021) – Chestnut Hill College returned to the campus softball field for today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader versus Holy Family University. The Tigers supported a one-hit performance from junior Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa.) with four runs in the first inning, 4-0, two runs in the fourth, 6-0, and four more in the sixth, 10-0 (6 innings). In game two, it was an eight-run third inning that hurt the Griffins as Holy Family University used an 10-0 lead as fodder for a 13-1, five-inning final.

Junior first baseman Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) was the only Griffin to record a hit in both games; she was 1-for-2 in each. She also pitched in both games, relieving senior Julianna Barry (Northridge, Calif.) in the first and starting – and closing – the second. Junior right fielder Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.) batted in the only Chestnut Hill College (1-21, 1-17) run of the evening with her ground out to short in the third inning of game two.

The Griffins' hit came early in game one as Reid led off the bottom of the second inning with a single to left field. Unfortunately, she was replaced on a fielder's choice before the Scarlet and Gold's runner was stranded at third base after a trailer runner was caught stealing. But by that time, Holy Family University (4-22, 4-18) had already plated four runs. They added two more runs to their score in the fourth inning, 6-0, and four more in the sixth, 10-0, ending the contest early.

The Tigers scored two runs in their first at-bat of game two, 2-0. Trouble came in the third inning as five hits and a pair of Griffin errors allowed the visitors to establish a 10-0 lead. Chestnut Hill College got a run back in the bottom of the frame, making use a lead-off double to centerfield from junior shortstop Haley Cooper (Hamilton, Va.) with a sacrifice from senior left fielder/pitcher Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.), and O'Byrne's grounder to the Tiger shortstop, 10-1. Unfortunately, the Scarlet and Gold was not able to complete the rally as sophomore Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa.) found her way out of trouble and earned her first win (1-5) of the season in an eventual 13-1, five-inning final.

Chestnut Hill College continues a busy final week of the regular season tomorrow, Thursday, April 29, with a 2:30 CACC twin bill at Thomas Jefferson University.
